Xiaomi launches the 1st 5G smartphone for less than 250 €

On this Friday, January 8, 2021, these are two smartphones that Xiaomi unveils: the Redmi Note 9T on the one hand, and the Redmi 9T on the other. If one offers 5G connectivity, the other benefits from 4 photo sensors.

Last year, we were really seduced by the Redmi Note 8T, a smartphone from Xiaomi and selling for less than 200 €. Without being a power monster, the device was the subject of a very good compromise between price, design, autonomy, performance, quality of the shot (except in low light). A year has passed and Xiaomi repeats the Redmi Note 9T. But unlike the Note 8T, which in itself had nothing really innovative, the new model innovates since it takes advantage of a 5G chip. Not that it’s the first phone to have such a connection, but at this price it’s unheard of yet.

Xiaomi takes the opportunity to launch at the same time a second model: the Redmi 9T. Here, no 5G compatibility, but a quadruple photo sensor on the back, where the Note 9T offers only three. Something to meet all needs and especially all budgets, since the price of the 9T is even lower than the Note 9T.

Redmi Note 9T: a new SoC and 5G compatibility

The Redmi Note 9T is a smartphone with6.53 ″ Gorilla Glass 5 display. The device measures 162 x 77.3 x 9.1 mm and weighs exactly 199 grams, which is 2 grams more than last year’s Note 8T. On the other hand, the device hasa new design with a circular photo sensor module on the back (a bit like on Huawei’s Mate 40 Pro). The smartphone also has a coating with grooves, which should help prevent fingerprints. At the front, another small novelty, there is a punch at the top left intended to accommodate the photo sensor.

On the hardware side, Xiaomi’s smartphone is equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 800U, a brand new SoC 5G compatible. Offering a 5G smartphone for less than € 250 is a great first. Note in passing that the Redmi Note 9T is the first phone to benefit from such an SoC. SoC at a discount some would say and yet … And yet, if we are to believe the first tests carried out under Geekbench and that we can see here and there on the Web, the processor is more efficient than a Snapdragon 765G (Google’s Pixel 5 SoC) than an Exynos 9820 and is very slightly overtaken by a Kirin 980 (Huawei’s P30 Pro SoC). Of course, we will run our own tests to verify all of this.

Xiaomi has not skimped on autonomy either, since a 5000 mAh battery accompanies the MediaTek Dimensity 800U. The device supports 18W fast charging, while a 22.5W charger comes in the smartphone box.

The photo part is broken down at the back as follows: a main sensor of 48 MP (aperture f / 1.79), a macro sensor of 2MP (pixel of 1.75µm) and a depth sensor of 2MP (pixel of 1.75µm ). At the front, there is a 13MP objective sensor (1.12µm pixel).

Two colors are available: Twilight Black and Aurora Violet. The device is available from January 15 at the following prices:

  • 249 € for the edition in 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage space. The Redmi Note 9T can even be acquired at a price of 229 €, provided that the decision is made between January 15 and 17
  • 269 € for the edition in 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage space.

Redmi 9T: 4 photo sensors and a really low price

Xiaomi has just unveiled a second smartphone model: the Redmi 9T. If the device is displayed at a lower price than the Note 9T, and despite some similarities, the two devices do not play in the same court. If the device has a 6.53 ″ screen, it is only Gorilla Glass 3. The back of the Redmi 9T is more classic with its photo sensors located on the upper part, to the left of the device.

Another difference, the Redmi 9T does not have a MediaTek SoC, Xiaomi having preferred to return to the fold of Qualcomm. So we find a Snapdragon 662, which is not 5G, but which has nevertheless proved its worth, on the Poco M3 in particular. The smartphone, on the other hand, benefits from a more substantial battery, since it benefits from a 6000 mAh module. It too benefits from 18W fast charging and a 22.5W charger in the box.

On the photo side, we have four sensors, where the Note 9T only has three. Their specificities are as follows: main sensor of 48 MP (aperture f / 1.79), ultra-wide-angle lens of 8 MP (aperture f / 2.2), macro sensor of 2 MP (aperture of f / 2.4), depth sensor of 2 MP (aperture f / 2.4). As for the selfie sensor, we benefit from an 8 MP module (opening f / 2.05).

  • 169 € for the 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage version.
  • 199 € for the 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage version.
