Samsung introduced the three new Galaxy S: the S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra. One of the good surprises of this harvest is the price of smartphones, which are visibly lower than their respective predecessors. But is this really the case? We have studied the prices of the different versions offered in France. The observation is good, even if the concessions are numerous. And some get a bigger discount.
As with every big Samsung launch, we’ve implemented the complete editorial system to bring you the launch of the Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra. An overview of the phones, a highlighting of the differences with their predecessors, a video on our YouTube channel, as well as a complete handling. We’ve also published articles on accessories: the Galaxy SmarTag and Galaxy Buds Pro.
We have largely returned to the configuration of each smartphone. But let’s briefly review the key points. The Galaxy S21, 5G compatible in all cases, is equipped with a 6.2-inch Full HD + display with variable cooling up to 120 Hz, of the’Exynos 2100, SoC engraved in 5 nm, of 8 GB RAM (no version with 12 GB), 128 or 256 GB storage, a battery 4000 mAh, a triple photo sensor 64 + 12 + 12 megapixels, a selfie sensor 10 megapixels, an ultrasonic fingerprint reader, a AKG dual speaker and a waterproof design.
The Galaxy S21 + incorporates all of these elements, with a few small changes: the Full HD + AMOLED panel measures 6.7 inch, the battery has a capacity of 4800 mAh and a sensor Ultra Wide Band is integrated. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is quite different. The AMOLED panel measures 6.8 inch and take advantage of a definition WQHD +. The battery reaches 5000 mAh. The definition of the selfie sensor is 40 megapixels. Four photo sensors of 108 + 12 + 10 + 10 megapixels are present at the back, with a laser autofocus. The hybrid zoom achieves the ratio of 100x. The S21 Ultra is S-Pen compatible. It integrates 12 or 16 GB of RAM and between 128 and 512 GB storage.
Up to 100 euros reduction on basic models
Now that we have recalled this bit of information, let’s focus on the price. The tables opposite will allow you to understand the prices of the versions of each phone. As a reminder, the starting prices for the three models: 859 euros for the Galaxy S21, 1059 euros for the Galaxy S21 + and 1259 euros for the Galaxy S21 Ultra. And the base versions of their respective predecessors were: 909 euros (Galaxy S20 4G), 1009 euros (Galaxy S20 + 4G) and 1359 euros (Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G).
Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S20 price comparison
|version||Galaxy s20||Galaxy s21|
|8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of 4G storage||909 euros|
|8GB RAM and 128GB 5G storage||859 euros|
|8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of 5G storage||909 euros|
|12GB RAM and 128GB 5G storage||1009 euros|
The Galaxy S21 and S21 Ultra are therefore less expensive than their predecessors, sometimes even when the latter were less well off. This is particularly the case with the Galaxy S21. He takes advantage of a drop of 50 euros compared to Galaxy S20 8/128 GB 4G. And this year you get 5G connection in all models.
Galaxy S21 + and Galaxy S20 + price comparison
|version||Galaxy S20 +||Galaxy s21 +|
|8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of 4G storage||1009 euros|
|8GB RAM and 128GB 5G storage||1059 euros|
|8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of 5G storage||1109 euros|
|12GB RAM and 128GB 5G storage||1109 euros|
|12GB RAM and 512GB 5G storage||1259 euros|
The Galaxy S21 + is 50 euros more expensive than the Galaxy S20 + 4G, with the same amount of RAM and storage. But it is 50 euros cheaper than the first 5G configuration (offered with 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage). Finally, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is offered 100 euros cheaper as the Galaxy S20 Ultra, with the same amount of RAM and storage. This is the one that gets the biggest discount on the cheapest configurations among the three Galaxy S21s.
Up to 120 euros savings on the best version of the Galaxy S21 Ultra
Now let’s talk about the other configurations. Because, like the Galaxy S20, S20 + and S20 Ultra, the Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra are not offered in just one version. This is even more justified this year, because they are without memory card reader. If you want double the storage space of S21 and S21 +, Samsung will ask you 50 euros extra. Quite simply.
Which means, for the same price as the 4G version of the S20, you get 5G and double the storage. For the Galaxy S21 +, for the same price as the 5G version of the S20 +, you will have double the storage, but 4 GB less RAM. Note that this year, Samsung is not renewing the 512 GB version of the Galaxy S20 +.
Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy S20 Ultra price comparison
|version||Galaxy S20 +||Galaxy s21 +|
|12GB RAM and 128GB 5G storage||1359 euros||1259 euros|
|12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of 5G storage||1309 euros|
|16GB RAM and 512GB 5G storage||1559 euros||1439 euros|
Let’s move on to the S21 Ultra. Samsung offers two additional versions. A first with 256 GB storage. And a second with 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM. To access the first one, you must lengthen 50 euros (as with S21 and S21 +). Or 1309 euros. And if you want to go to the second, you still have to pay 130 euros more (or 180 euros from the basic version). Or 1439 euros for the 16/512 GB version. Remember that the 16/512 GB version of the Galaxy S20 Ultra was sold for 1559 euros. We therefore have a substantial saving of 120 euros. Still.
What are the concessions for this price reduction?
You will find that this price drop comes with a drop in certain features. First of all, there is no more charger in the box (and no more hands-free kit, except in France). And there is no longer a microSDXC card reader. As with iPhones, you will therefore have to make do with the storage space built into the purchase (and empty your smartphone regularly).
There are also changes in the datasheet. The mineral glass that dressed the back of the Galaxy S20 is replaced by a polycarbonate back. Then, the screens are no longer curved, but flat (to the delight of those who did not like it). The S21 and S21 + do not benefit much from photo developments and the definition of their screens is down (going from Quad HD to Full HD). Fortunately, the S21 + sees its battery strengthen. This is not the case with the S20 which would have needed it.
The S20 Ultra benefits from a slightly smaller screen (0.1 inch less), but the definition is the same and it is S-Pen compatible. Also, the battery is the same, but the fast charging is less powerful. The time-of-flight camera of the S20 Ultra is replaced here by a laser autofocus, element that you also find in the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The 48 megapixel sensor with 10x hybrid zoom is replaced by a 10 megapixel sensor with 10x optical zoom. A fourth sensor, 10 megapixels with 3x optical zoom, is added to the package. This last element, which supports the other sensor with digital zoom, is the biggest novelty of the Galaxy S21. Three modules are stabilized, but all at the optical level and not at the sensor level. So there is some good. Hopefully there will be no worse. Answer very soon in our test.
Why is Samsung lowering the price of the Galaxy S21?
The Galaxy S21 are therefore lower in price and see their technical sheets lowered. Noticeably for some models. Lots for others. In the title of this article, we ask a question: why did Samsung choose to lower the price of its flagships at the beginning of the year, when the trends in 2020 were on the contrary on the rise? Samsung did not wish to expand on the subject. But according to the information we have been able to glean from the manufacturer, as well as the insistent hallway noise, Samsung would have been very disappointed with the sales figures of the S20 series. Moreover, the same commercial fate seems to await the Galaxy Note 20.
At the end of the year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S20 FE, which offered a high-end experience at a much more affordable price. And there, as if by magic, the public adheres to the concept. It is even rumored that the S20 FE is a commercial success which largely contributed to saving the year 2020 from Samsung. Following this very positive feedback, Samsung has decided to review its copy in order to lower the prices of the Galaxy S21. And this even if that implies some concessions.
