🤔 Why choose an electric bicycle?

Just like the classic bicycle, the electric assist bicycle is a greener choice when you want to avoid the car. Convenient for traveling over short to medium distances, it requires less effort for pedaling. Your journeys are less strenuous and you can drive faster while avoiding a sweaty arrival at work.

Assistance can be adjusted for most models depending on how much effort you want to put in or simply be turned off. This makes it an equally valid option for your physical activities, especially for people of old age or with a health problem.

🚲 MTB or urban bike?

You have to be clear about what you plan to do with your electric bike, but also where you will go, because the bike that suits you totally depends on it. Your choice will also depend on your tastes.

As the name suggests, urban bikes are designed to ride on paved roads as efficiently as possible. They have lighter frames and smaller tires to help you reach maximum speed with minimum effort. If you mostly ride in the city and don’t plan on exploring off-road terrain, this type of bike is well suited.

Mountain bikes as far as they are concerned have a more sporting vocation. They are designed to tackle the roughest and most rugged terrain nature can offer. They use aggressive tires to find easy grip on almost any surface. They can be used for your trips in town as well as for your off-road trips: in the mountains, in the forest or on grueling tracks.

While the suspension is ideal for off-road riding as the name suggests, ATVs are heavier, more difficult to handle and cost more. It’s a versatile choice especially in electric, but dispensable if you plan to spend most of your time on the roads. If in doubt, you can just as easily choose a hybrid or hybrid model (all-terrain bike) like the Sduro Trekking 1.0 from Haibike which is part of our selection.

💲 What is your budget?

At the entry level, you will find electric bikes between € 500 and € 1000. The value for money for some models makes it possible to find a good compromise while remaining reliable. In the mid-range, it takes between 1000 and 2000 €. You will find well-equipped models with next-level reliability.

In the high-end segment, prices can climb up to 5,000 €. These VAEs are generally high performance “speed-bikes” or mountain bikes capable of reaching speeds of up to 45 km / h. In this case, the bicycle and its rider must comply with specific rules.

📃 Electric bicycle: what are the regulations?

E-bikes have at least one motor powered by a rechargeable battery. When buying your bike, make sure the following conditions are met:

  • The triggering of electric assistance is necessarily linked to pedaling. It should be cut when you stop pedaling.
  • The maximum allowable motor power is 250 watts.
  • The speed must be restricted to 25 km / h.
  • Motors must be electromagnetically compatible
  • The safety of the chargers must be ensured and the batteries must be recyclable.

Wearing a helmet is compulsory for children under 12, but it is recommended for adolescents and adults. At night or in the event of insufficient visibility, wearing a retro-reflective vest is also compulsory for the rider of the bicycle and his passenger.

Unrestraining your electric bike is now punishable by up to 1 year in prison and a fine of € 30,000. When the speed exceeds 25 km / h, the bicycle falls into the category of mopeds and the wearing of a helmet becomes compulsory as well as registration and insurance. They are prohibited from riding on the cycle paths.
