Screen and design

At first glance, the iPad Pro 2021 is quite similar to the model launched in 2020. Both have models in 11 inches and 12.9 inches, in silver and space gray. The frame for the dual rear camera is also the same, similar to the “cooktop” style module that we see on the iPhone 11 and 12.

Moving on to the screens, on the 11-inch models, we have the same Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2388 x 1668 pixels and a density of 264 ppi, which features ProMotion technology for more fluid graphics, with a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

The change is in the 12.9 ”versions. The iPad Pro 2021 has a Liquid Retina XDR display, which features miniLED technology to offer better images, with greater contrast and greater dynamic range. The model also offers a higher brightness rate, reaching 1,000 nits on the entire screen and a peak of 1.6000 nits (HDR).

Performance and storage

Now let’s talk about the high point of the new iPad Pro, the M1 chip. There were already rumors that Apple could launch a tablet with a powerful chip, which would mirror that processor. But few expected it to be the M1 itself, previously featured on recent MacBooks and iMacs – which is fantastic. The possibility is given by the ARM architecture of this chip, which does not require major modifications for it to run both on computers and on the iPad with iPadOS.

The iPad Pro 2020, in turn, featured the Apple A12Z Bionic. In numbers, we have up to 50% faster performance on the iPad Pro 2021 with M1 and 40% higher graphics performance. The newer chip also optimizes artificial intelligence, augmented reality and camera capabilities.

The storage versions are basically the same for both generations. However, there is a new option of 2 TB for the 5th generation iPad Pro, in both the 11 ”and 12.9” models. RAM memory also varies: while all models in 2020 had 6 GB of RAM, those in 2021 have 8 GB (in versions with 128, 256 or 512 GB of storage) or 16 GB (in models with 1 or 2 TB).

Cameras

In terms of cameras, there are not many news on the rear, both generations have sensors of 12 MP and 10 MP (ultrawide), in addition to the LiDAR scanner, for greater precision in applications with augmented reality.

At the front, there is an upgrade in the sensor of the TrueDepth camera, from 7 MP to 12 MP, for more defined images. The camera has the Center Stage, which should improve the video calling experience. With software tricks, she can frame your face, even when you move sideways, and recognize when someone else is showing up, to show you on the scene.

Battery and connectivity

Apple promises up to 10 hours of autonomy to surf the internet via Wi-Fi on all iPad Pro 2021 models – the same estimate as the previous generation. Using mobile data, they are up to 9 hours away from outlets under the same conditions.

As with the iPhone 12, Apple is updating its line of iPads to offer compatibility with 5G networks (optional – you can still opt for the Wi-Fi only version). In the USA, the iPad Pro 2021 supports millimeter waves (mmWave), with a maximum theoretical speed of 4 Gb / s.

Another change is related to the USB-C port, which finally has support for Thunderbolt, which allows a maximum speed of 40 Gb / s (theoretical), counts 10 Gb / s of the previous models. In practice, you can use faster external storage and external monitors in 6K resolution.

Accessories

The iPad Pro 2021 is compatible with the same ones from the previous generation, such as the Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil of 2nd generation. The company is launching a new Magic Keyboard that adapts better to the dimensions of the latest 12.9 ”model, which is thicker.
