Cloud storage is already—or should be—common for most people. Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud Drive and OneDrive are some of the services available for people to perform their backups, free up space on their HDs or SSDs and have quick and easy access to files anywhere and anytime.
In general, they are all very similar, differing on very specific issues. It’s hard to say which one is better, as this varies a lot with each user and the type of service they use. A person who is used to using Windows and the Office suite, for example, can have some advantages when using OneDrive. The same goes for Apple users with iCloud Drive, or for Android users with Google Drive.
In this text, we will present the main features of OneDrive, how it works and how you can integrate it into your daily life.
What is OneDrive

OneDrive is Microsoft’s cloud storage system. However, it is important to remember that it can also be used by Apple users, and it also has an Android application. In addition to allowing you to keep a backup of your main files, it has a good integration with other Microsoft products, and for those who use Windows, it can be the best option available.
Another important feature is that OneDrive has an app for Windows. It lets you access files saved in the cloud from the desktop. However, the function of searching for files on another computer has been discontinued.
How to use OneDrive
OneDrive has a very intuitive and easy-to-use interface, even for those not used to this type of service. This is true for those who intend to use it on their cell phone, as well as on their computer, from the browser.
cell phone or tablet
Starting with the most basic, the OneDrive app has the main features and is an excellent tool for those who don’t want to lose photos and other important files from their phone or tablet. It automatically backs up your photos so you don’t have to worry about uploading them to the cloud.
To use it, just download it from Google Play or the App Store. Once that’s done, you’ll need to log in through your Hotmail, Outlook, Live or other Microsoft-associated account. Then you choose how you want to configure the automatic backup service. For example, if you enable this function for the camera, as soon as you take a photo, it will be added to your cloud account automatically, and you can access it at any time, even if you are offline.
This is where you can enjoy all that OneDrive has to offer. When accessing the service through the browser, you will be able to upload your files to the cloud. From here it is very similar to other services of this type: you can organize your files in folders, create files shared with others and automatically sync with OneDrive apps for Windows or macOS.
If you will only be accessing the files when browsing the internet, the app is optional, although it is very useful. For those who will use it for studying, working or for other activities that require faster access, having the latest version of OneDrive installed on your desktop or notebook is very useful. In this case, whenever you make any modification or update in the browser or application, the other will be automatically updated.
Free version vs. paid version
As with other services, you can create a free OneDrive account. With it, you’ll have access to 5GB of cloud storage and access to Microsoft Office online tools like Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Even with fewer features than the desktop versions, it is a tool with many advantages, which justifies this free subscription.
If you need more space to store your files, you can upgrade to 50GB for R$7 per month. There is also the possibility of becoming an Office 365 subscriber. The Microsoft subscription service offers access to all Office applications, in their full versions, costing R$24 per month. This subscription also offers 1TB of cloud space, plus some premium features like creating shareable links that expire or password protected. And if you still need more space, Microsoft allows you to buy 200GB packages, up to a limit of 1TB more.
