This Tuesday (8) Twitter presented its traditional retrospective with the most liked tweets and most used emojis in the year. In 2020, the platform was used to share messages related to issues such as the new coronavirus pandemic and the U.S. presidential election.
2020 on Twitter was also marked by the deaths of actor Chadwick Boseman; former basketball player Kobe Bryant; and George Floyd, murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis, United States. All of these events are linked to some of the most engaged tweets and the most used hashtags on the social network.
According to the platform, the most popular hashtag this year was # COVID19, used more than 400 million times. It was followed by #BlackLivesMatter and #StayHome.

Also according to the social network, 2020 registered more than 7 thousand tweets per minute about TV shows and movies. The list with the most commented programs on the platform from January to November has two Brazilian productions at the top: Big Brother Brasil and A Fazenda.
The ranking also includes series such as Gray’s Anatomy, La Casa de Papel and Game of Thrones, as well as Japanese productions such as Haikyu !!, Demon Slayer and Music Station.

Most commented teams on Twitter in 2020
In 2020, Twitter recorded more than 2 billion sports tweets. The list of most talked about teams from January to November has the Los Angeles Lakers in first place. The team’s year was marked in January by the death of idol Kobe Bryant and, in October, by the NBA title.
Among the ten most talked about clubs, the only South American is Flamengo. The most talked about sporting events were the Super Bowl and the Champions League final.

Most commented people on Twitter in 2020
With the US presidential election held in November, the most talked about personalities on Twitter around the world were the current president, Donald Trump, and the elected president, Joe Biden. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris also appeared among the ten most talked about people of the year.
The deaths of George Floyd and Kobe Bryant have made them third and fourth on the platform list.

Most used emojis on Twitter in 2020
Twitter also identified a 20% increase in tweets that express some kind of thanks. According to the platform, gratitude tweets to doctors have become 135% more common and teachers 30% more common. The social network registered even more than 17 million tweets with terms like “essential workers” or “frontline workers”.
