The 11 best RPG games of 2022 confirmed so far

If you’re looking for a genre that will consume a lot of your time in 2022, you should probably keep an eye on the role-playing games that will be released this year. There are several high caliber titles in development and some of them have been in the pipeline for many years.

In addition, the list also includes some games that are likely to compete for the title of best game of the year – which just shows that we are facing an excellent year for RPG lovers. Of course, it was not possible to list all the releases of this genre, but we brought the main ones.

1. Pokémon Legends: Arceus

The year 2022 will go down in franchise history. Pokémon as the year that the series will win a game completely different from its predecessors. Pokémon Legends: Arceus intends to bring completely new mechanics to the franchise, an open world with no transitions to be explored, as well as new monsters to be captured.

The game will take place in Hisui, the name of the region that would become Sinnoh. The period predates the emergence of Pokémon gyms and leagues, which is why the challenges to be overcome are likely to be different.

2. Granblue Fantasy: Relink

As we are still at the beginning of the year, many games do not yet have an exact release date, but they are scheduled for this year. We start then with Granblue Fantasy: Relink, an action RPG that will take place in the same kingdom and will feature characters from the first Granblue Fantasy. According to director Tetsuya Fukuhara, it will feature 4-person co-op multiplayer, as well as a single mode with AI companions, and three difficulty modes. The game will be released for PS5, PS4 and PC.

3. Star Ocean: The Divine Force

Another RPG franchise that will receive a new title is Star Ocean, since in 2022 the sixth game of its main chronology will be released called Star Ocean: The Divine Force. It will bring back the two-hero system, with the story being presented from two different points of view, diverse captivating characters, great three-dimensional exploration and the freedom to fly throughout the environment as you please. It’s a great way to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

4. Elden Ring

One of the most anticipated games of 2022 is the new title from FromSoftware, a studio known for the Souls series. The player this time will be launched into an open world dominated by terrifying creatures and incredibly challenging battles – which is the standard of experience for the franchise.

One of the highlights is the fact that George RR Martin is helping to create a more complex, immersive and rich storyline for players.

5. Triangle Strategy

Don’t be fooled by the style of the game. Triangle Strategy, a kind of spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics, is a strategic RPG that should make waves among Switch owners.

The game will take place in a fictional universe dominated by the war between three countries. The player will take command of Serenoa Wolffot in several intelligent battles that will require a lot of strategy to win.

An entirely new franchise begins with Forspoken, a game that presents a gigantic magical world to explore as the character Frey Holland. The title promises to bring gameplay focused on the narrative, but with entirely new mechanics for players to experience in this open universe for discoveries.

Introduced a few years ago by Bethesda, Starfield is still a mystery to us gamers. However, we are certainly facing a great game, with hours of gameplay, a lot of exploration in unknown planets and a story that will be on par with franchises like The Elders Scrolls and Fallout.

The long-awaited RGP based on the Harry Potter saga is finally here. The game will take place many years before the events of the books/movies, but will present the same magical universe that players already know. Not much is known about the game yet, but the premise is certainly very good – and we are facing yet another strong contender for the best of the year.

Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated games of the year is the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Still without a defined title, the game has already received some trailers, but they revealed a lot of history and news that the game will bring to a title that will take advantage of many mechanics from the previous game.

10. Sea of Stars

In addition to the aforementioned Triangle Strategy, there’s one more RPG this year for the more nostalgic gamers. Sea of Stars has a Super Nintendo game face, featuring beautiful pixelated graphics and turn-based combat. In addition, it brings a complete dynamic lighting system, a story full of original characters and exciting moments, and a world full of activities to do. The game will be available this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.

11. Salt and Sacrifice

In 2016, the indie Salt and Sanctuary was released and was very successful, even being described as “the Dark Souls 2D”. In 2022, its sequel will arrive on PS5, PS4 and PC, Salt and Sacrifice. Controlling the Marked Inquisitor, the player will venture into a world beyond the sanctuary filled with chaos, terror and dark creatures. Punitive difficulty and bizarre monsters are present, as well as new mechanics and environments that will require attention and courage when facing the unknown.
