Tetragon is a challenging game with charming puzzles created by Brazilians | Games

Brazil produces independent games acclaimed around the world. Our country has strong titles — like horizon chase, Dandara and Chroma Squad — and continues to grow. This year, two games arrived in August drawing a lot of attention: the puzzle tetragon and the dodgeball RPG Dodgeball Academy. In the following lines, I tell you how both games delighted me, and why you should keep an eye on them.

tetragon it’s challenging even for the biggest puzzle fans

Two weeks ago I was introduced to tetragon and I was surprised by the puzzle game. Developed by the Brazilian studio Cafundó, from Santa Catarina, the game has more than 40 stages, in which you must take the protagonist Lucius to a door to pass the level. With no way to jump, the biggest challenge is to create a safe path for the character just by rotating the map 90 degrees and controlling towers.

With gameplay that mixes puzzle mechanics with platforms, tetragon it’s quite challenging. Until I got the hang of it, I struggled a bit with the controls to get through the early stages, but that was necessary to prepare me for the more complex challenges ahead.

As I said at the beginning, it is not possible to freely jump into tetragon. Lucius can only move horizontally, in addition to being able to climb towers. For this reason, to pass the level, it is necessary to create a path in which the protagonist can reach the door just by walking. In terms of difficulty, the game has a good learning curve and should please puzzle fans, as I did.

However, the control scheme bothered me a bit. I felt the movement with the analog sticks several times, and the system of selecting the turrets is quite confusing. To choose a platform to move you need to navigate each one using the right and left bumpers on the joysticks. This isn’t really a problem in stages that don’t need speed.

In the visual part, tetragon is very charming. The textures of the maps are very well done and the art used in the backgrounds of the levels is beautiful. The soundtrack deserves praise as well. You can see that the Estudio Cafundó team put its heart into the game’s development. It’s worth knowing the game.

Dodgeball Academy is a sport anime in game form

Another Brazilian game that is worth mentioning is Dodgeball Academy. Created by Pocket Trap studio — also responsible for the acclaimed Ninjin: Clash of Carrots — the sports game features dodgeball matches with RPG mechanics, such as level progression systems, different attributes and equipment builds.

In addition to the fun gameplay, Dodgeball Academy it’s full of references to sports manga and anime both in the visuals and in the characters’ speeches. For example, the protagonist Otto is the classic animated boy who loves dodgeball and wants to win every championship. His luck is to study at a school specializing in sports.

In gameplay, Dodgeball Academy pits players to face their opponents in dodgeball matches. Participants have a life bar that decreases with each ball hit. In addition, each character has a unique special ability that can be used to turn the game around. Therefore, it is necessary to think about the strategy to build the best combination of athletes.

I just missed more game modes, especially online matches. Dodgeball Academy it’s repetitive in some situations and has a short plot, so it would be perfect to vary it a little while facing other people. Even so, it’s still worth giving this game a try.
