Jakarta, IDN Times – A lump of white foam like snow covered the surface of the East Flood Canal River (BKT) in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, on Sunday (28/6). This phenomenon has become a spectacle of citizens.

Head of DKI Jakarta Environment Agency (LH) Andono Warih revealed, the white foam wad emerged due to the deposition of household waste detergent that was lifted up by the current turbulence.

“The phenomenon of flow turbulence due to different heights from the opposite side, and was triggered by the closure of the Weir 1 Malacca Water Gate,” Andono said in Jakarta, as reported by Among.

Foam wadding resembles snow which appears around the BKT WEIR-1 Malaka Sari Water Gate, Malaka Sari Sub-district, Andono said, has been followed up by the Jakarta Environment Agency since Saturday (27/6).

There was also the closing of the Weir 1 Malaka Sari Water Gate, Andono continued, carried out by the Ciliwung Cisadane River Basin Agency (BBWSCC) since Tuesday (23/6), in the context of draining water in the BKT area.

The closing of the floodgates from the upstream area of ​​the BKT was carried out routinely and periodically by the BBWSCC, in the context of river maintenance.

When the floodgates are opened, said Andono, the flow is pumped for flushing (flushing) so turbulence occurs which causes foam.

“Closing the floodgates causes currents from the opposite direction so that the flow experiences a strong movement, so the detergent that has been deposited for a long time at the bottom rises to the surface,” he said.

Andono said, the community around the riverbanks are still many who use hard detergents to wash at home, wash the business, to wash clothes.

BKT water sources come from Cipinang River, Sunter River, Buaran River, Jati Kramat River, and several connecting water channels that pass through Jatinegara and Duren Sawit.

“Indeed, it comes from community waste that contains a lot of hard detergents,” he said.

Detergent categorized as hard will produce a lot of foam because of the content of Methylene Blue Active Surfactant (MBAS).

This type of detergent, continued Andono, is less friendly to the environment because it has the potential to damage the river ecosystem.

“Though the amount of foam does not become a benchmark the results of washing can be cleaner. We recommend that people use soft detergents that are more environmentally friendly,” he said.

Andono ensures that the foam will disappear by itself. In order to prevent the recurrence of the incident, the DKI Jakarta Environmental Department Office intensified the socialization and law enforcement.

“We are intensifying the socialization and law enforcement by the DLH Compliance and Law Enforcement Division, to the business of washing vehicles and clothing along the BKT that drain waste into water bodies without processing,” he said.

Gradually, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will build a Domestic Wastewater Treatment System (SPALD), which aims to produce processed water that meets wastewater quality standards, which can be safely discharged into water bodies.
