Review TV Box Intelbras Izy Play: expensive, but an interesting option [análise/vídeo]

Like Positivo, the Brazilian Intelbras has been betting on smart home gadgets. In May, the company placed on the market the TV Box Izy Play, a device that can turn your old TV into a Smart TV. The device, whose suggested price is R $ 429, runs Android TV, displays content in Full HD and also brings a remote control with built-in microphone for you to activate the Google Assistant.

Here, Izy Play competes directly with the Mi TV Stick, which has very similar configurations. However, as Xiaomi’s device recently arrived in Brazil (officially through DL Electronics), you will have to shell out about R $ 100 more to take the Chinese gadget.

What about Izy Play? Is it worth it? I used this device here at home in the last few days and I will tell you all the details in this review.

Kit and installation

In addition to the box, the kit comes with an HDMI cable for you to connect to your TV and Izy Play, there is also a 10 watt power supply, two AAA batteries and a remote control. The TV Box has six inputs. They are: two USB, one HDMI, one AV (P2-RCA), one Ethernet port and one for the power supply.

Weighing 288 grams, I liked the compact design of the box, but it is worth noting that this device is distant, for example, from the Fire TV Stick proposal, which is focused on practicality and can be taken anywhere.

Regarding the control, it is very dry and brings the main buttons for you to control the system. In addition, it has dedicated buttons for Netflix, YouTube, Google Assistant and Google Play to download applications. I liked that the Izy Play control has an infrared sensor, but it is also possible to use it via Bluetooth, which eliminates the need to keep pointing at the TV. The second option is ball show.

Ixy Play Kit

Installing Izy Play was easy and even quick. In my case, I connected HDMI to my television (and Izy Play) and plugged the device into the outlet through the source. If you have an older TV that does not have an HDMI input, just use a P2-RCA cable that, unfortunately, does not come in the kit. I also missed an option to plug the device directly into the TV’s USB port instead of using the outlet.

To start using the device, you need to connect the TV Box to Wi-Fi or, via internet cable, through the Ethernet port; I chose the first route (via Wi-Fi), which is more practical. That done, just configure the device; it is possible to do everything through the TV (manually) or through the smartphone via Google Assistant. To do this, just say “Ok Google, set up my device” and follow the recommended step by step.

Software and Performance (positive and negative points)

Internally, the device has 1.2 GHz quad-core Amlogic S805X chipset. The RAM is 1 GB, while the internal storage is 8 GB. The device can display content in Full HD quality (1080p) at 60 Hz.

Overall, Izy Play works quite well, but chokes on some tasks. During the tests, I noticed crashes in games and also when triggering the Google Assistant.

Running Android TV 9.0, I liked the interface here. You can find what you need quickly and the top apps are at the top, so you can favor those you use frequently.

In the left corner, the menus appear: apps, Netflix, YouTube, Play Movies and TV, apps featured on the Play Store, Spotify and Facebook Watch. In the center are some previews of all these services. In the upper right corner, the system displays the time, which is next to the settings gear.

The voice command in the control through the Google Assistant is a differential and also a very useful resource for those who bet on smart home. During testing, I asked the virtual assistant to open the Play Store, Netflix and other apps. However, some commands are not answered, as when I asked to leave Netflix – she went to search.

In addition, other features that we already know about Google Assistant are here on Izy Play: it is possible to ask the time, temperature in a region, when a personality was born, among others. It could be better, but it is possible to accept the available resources.

Weather / Google Assistant

For those who enjoy games, titles like Asphalt 8 Airborne and Real Racing 3 come pre-installed. In addition to these, you can download Beach Buggy Racing, Crossy Road, Red Ball 4, Deer Hunter 2018 and others. Streaming services that are popularized in Smart TVs are also here: you can install Globoplay, Telecine Play, HBO GO and Deezer.

Still, I didn’t find the app store so complete, here the media services stand out. Does this mean that Izy Play is more focused on streaming? Yes, it does.

I already have a Smart TV at home and I barely use the browser, I think I never used it to be honest, and unfortunately, for those who usually access web pages on TV, Izy Play owes that, which is very negative.

Izy Play wallpaper

A nice feature worth mentioning here is the background that displays some landscapes when the TV Box is inactive after a few minutes.

Connectivity

In connectivity, Intelbras Izy Play does not disappoint. As it has Bluetooth and two USB ports, you can connect peripherals and other gadgets. During the evaluation, I was able to connect a keyboard and a Bluetooth headset. Both worked without problems and there were no connection failures.

In addition to these items that I mentioned, you can connect a joystick for game apps or also a thumb drive, additional memory, external hard drive or a mouse for easy navigation.

Google Home connected to TV

To mirror the phone screen on the TV I used the Google Home app. Overall, it worked well with static content. Videos and games do not play well since there are some stuck during the exhibition and this will certainly bother you. For the basics, until it works.

Worth it?

Look, this TV Box surprised me a lot. Izy Play is the right device for you who want to “modernize” that old TV that still can handle the stride. I recommend this box, especially for bedrooms. For the living room, a Smart TV remains the best option.

I am also not going to lie that the amount of wires bothered me a little, so an Amazon Fire TV Stick still pleases me in terms of “flexibility of use”.

Intelbras Izy Play

Izy Play conquers me for its easy installation, being able to connect the device to any new or old television; voice commands by Google Assistant is a differentiator; as well as the connectivity system, which is very complete. On the other hand, the app store is limited and performance is not that great. I also confess that the price is steep; I would pay R $ 300 on this TV Box.

Now, if you want to see what the competition has to offer, it’s worth taking a look at Amazon Fire TV Stick, Mi TV Stick or Mi TV Box S, which, as a differential, the latter has 4K HDR technology. Another option priced close to Izy Play is Google’s famous Chromecast.
