The world of intermediate smartphones is even more competitive than that of high-end devices. They bring resources inherited from previous stout models, democratize technologies and try to draw attention in some way beyond just “what was new at the top of the line a year or two ago”. Some phones focus on the camera, others on the screen and the Galaxy M51 has its target on the battery.
It is almost an internal copy of the Galaxy A71 and inherits details of the Galaxy S20, such as the shape of the rear cameras in a kind of cooktop, enters the wave of plastic body that has recently appeared in several lines, and adopts a 7,000 mAh battery. It is more than just about any competitor and Samsung still promises two days away from the plug. Does she really get to this? Follow me in the next few paragraphs that I’ll tell you about.

Design and canvas
Well, the time of the all plastic smartphone is back and if you worry about it, you will complain about the Galaxy M51. It has edges and back in this material, but the ring that surrounds the sides of the cell phone feels like a more robust device, while the back has a less “good” feel. It crosses with some ease even.
It is too far away from the thin, hideous plastic of the Galaxy S5 and shines like glass would. As you will certainly use a case for every time you have your cell phone in hand, the plastic touch will be replaced with whatever you bought as a case. It is precisely for this reason that I am not complaining much about the choice here.
I much prefer the plastic of the old Lumias, but the Galaxy M51 does not look bad when beauty is taken into account. The device is sober, does not try to create fashion and looks beautiful on the table. It bothers me to have plastic on a R $ 6,000 cell phone like the Galaxy S21, but not on a model that can cost a third of it.
Because of the generous battery, this model is actually thicker and heavier than intermediates of the brand itself, such as the Galaxy A71. This is a mathematics that I always like to see applied, since increasing autonomy seems to me much more important than leaving the cell phone thinner and lighter.
If you’re concerned about numbers, the Galaxy M51 is less than two millimeters thicker than the A71, plus 34 grams heavier. It won’t make a difference in your daily life. It didn’t work on mine and my pants didn’t fall in the middle of the street while I walked with it in my pocket.
The screen fits very well with what Samsung itself has been doing in middlemen for some time. Here the display is a Super AMOLED Plus of 6.7 inches and that runs in Full HD stretched to 20: 9 aspect ratio. This means that the colors are very vivid, the contrast borders on infinity and the dark screen makes the whole system spend less energy.
It would be perfect if you weren’t the only speaker for games and music, right next to the USB-C connector. You can easily cover this place and intermediary with stereo sound is not really a novelty, is it Samsung ?! This was missing to close the media part with a flourish. That is why it is only silver, wanting to be gold.
Ah, there is a biometric reader on the on / off button. He’s fast, agile, but he couldn’t read my fingerprint when his finger was damp. It was just drying on the shirt and ready, solved and the screen was unlocked.
Hardware and Software
If the math to save when making the Galaxy M51 chose the finish to put your hands on, in performance it made the user happy. Here there is a Snapdragon 730G running with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB for internal space.
This line of processors is geared towards the gamer audience, even with the M51 being a traditional looking phone. This means that it has an extra breath inside the Snapdragon 700 and so on, to run everything well. And he does.
Be it Asphalt 9 or even the heavy Breath of th… I mean Genshin Impact, the Galaxy M51 does not look ugly and is not far from what is expected from high-end devices of the past generation. The first game is older, but it’s running pretty well here. Genshin Impact is recent, much heavier and the drop in frames per second is occasional, nothing that sacrifices gambling.
I just noticed that the Snapdragon 730G got very hot in games, but not to the point of bothering the hand.
Android 10 under One UI 2.5, of this version that I am using during the review, did not show any choking in any application, even when I was rolling the timeline of Twitter, Facebook or Instagram while I should be sleeping. Samsung’s interface remains the best on the market for combining easy-to-access items for large screens, but it slips because it brings a lot of pre-installed stuff.
The list includes the Office package that comes from a partnership between Samsung and Microsoft, games with Candy Crush Saga and Disney Kingdom, Samsung Pay via NFC, Netflix, Spotify, the Galaxy Store, the 99 racing app and social networks with Facebook and TikTok , in addition to the Wish store.
The Galaxy M51 has already entered into Samsung’s security update promise for four years since launch, so if you buy the device in 2021, it has patches with major fixes coming to it by 2024, along with Android updates for a few years, but not that much. This is great for those who know that cell phones are expensive and cannot change models every year.
On camera, you have four lenses to use as you like here, the main sensor with 64 megapixels, another 12 megapixels for ultrawide photos and two 5 megapixels being one for macro photos and another for calculating the background in dynamic focus mode.
In well-lit environments the result of the main lens is great, which is not too far in the ultrawide no. I still get the feeling of having a hotter photo on the main sensor and a colder one on the ultrawide, even if the photo is recorded in the same place and with the shortest possible time between the two, something like one or two seconds.
At night the work of the clear lens on the main sensor, together with the night mode, yields great images and without much visible noise, going to the expected for a premium intermediate device. Better than that you have on the Galaxy S21, which costs triple. So it’s great.
The macro lens has very low resolution, but ends up taking good pictures to post on Instagram. The focus is adjusted to close to three centimeters and results in some interesting results from objects with details you never thought to see.
For selfies the Galaxy M51 has a single camera inside a hole in the screen, with a 32 megapixel sensor. The dynamic range is generous, the contrast does its job well and the details are well marked, as long as you turn off the beautification mode. The background blur works well even with more outward hair strands, as expected for an intermediary who has only one lens for this.
If you searched for the Galaxy M51 because of the battery, it might be more that I need to be honest: I have never used a smartphone with a battery life as long as this one. It’s 7,000 mAh with a promise for two days away from the plug, but I managed to get to the third one before putting the phone in the charger.
Of course, in a time of pandemic it is complicated to go out and use it on the street (only go out if necessary!), But I did what I could to always check social networks, listen to two hours of podcasts, watch two hours of film on Netflix and enjoy some game in the meantime, to spend two full days without remembering the porter, arriving still alive on the third.
In numbers, a video in Full HD, filling the entire screen of the M51 with 75% brightness, being accessed from YouTube via Wi-Fi, consumed 6% in two hours of playback. I tested Jurassic World: Threatened Kingdom, which has two hours and Netflix drank 9.8% in the same settings. That’s enough energy to watch 10 two-hour movies on a single charge, or 33 hours of video on YouTube.
And he, the charger, still comes in the box! Better: it is powerful. The adapter delivers 25 watts of energy, which fill the battery tank in two hours, or 30% of the charge in half an hour and 65% in one hour.
Congratulations, Samsung, since recharging 7,000 mAh of charge would take forever with simple chargers for intermediate smartphones.
It is worth it?
Yes a lot. If you think of an intermediate smartphone to last two or three years in your hand, the Galaxy M51 is a very good choice. On the outside and inside it is basically a Galaxy A71 with almost twice the battery and look that the A71 was already good last year.
The performance of the Galaxy M51 is consistent, the screen is spectacular for a premium intermediary, the battery life is the envy of any competitor in Brazil, but the finish can leave some feeling less positive. I honestly do not bother to know that anyone would put on a protective cover, which will already touch the glass and metal.
Even so, the rear plastic glows like glass and the edges are firm. It still has a charger in the box and the plug adapter is powerful. The Galaxy M51 even has a headphone jack and microSD card slot, but I missed wireless charging.
It was launched for R $ 2.6 thousand in November 2020 and at the time of publication of this review, four months later, it can already be found at prices around R $ 2 thousand. I don’t find competitors with positive points close to the Galaxy M51 at this price. So it is a phone with a high chance of being the best intermediary you will find, even in 2021.
