The iPhone 12 Pro Max landed in Brazil with scary prices, breaking the five-digit barrier and reaching R $ 14 thousand in the version with more space. Compared to the previous generation, the most complete mobile phone from Apple gained a bigger screen, a more powerful camera system and a 5G connection. Visually, it’s a stretched iPhone 12 Pro, but this year there are exclusive features on the larger model’s cameras.
The zoom lens on the iPhone 12 Pro Max sees further, the image sensor on the main camera has grown and this is the first time on a smartphone that optical stabilization is on the sensor, not the lens. Does it make sense to spend so much money on a cell phone? I used the news from Apple in the past few weeks and count my impressions in this review.

What doesn’t change with the iPhone 12 Pro
To focus on what matters, I am not going to go into features that are identical to those of the iPhone 12 Pro, whose analysis has already been published. The stainless steel design is elegant, iOS remains a great strength, the screen quality is excellent and the performance is impeccable on both models. And no, the difference of a thousand reais between iPhones was not enough to make Apple put a charger in the box.
Design and canvas
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is more familiar to me, as I used an iPhone 11 Pro Max last year. The small growth on the screen, which went from 6.5 to 6.7 inches, maintains the good experience for playing games, watching movies with Dolby Vision or even for trivial tasks, such as consulting the agenda appointments, since all applications pass showing more content at once.
Obviously, the advantages exist at the expense of ergonomics and design, since the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a somewhat clumsy device to be used with one hand and draws a lot of attention due to the 226 gram weight that is felt in the pants pocket. all the time. Still, it’s pretty hard to get back to the size of the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro after getting used to such a big screen.
Sometimes, however, I feel that the iPhone 12 Pro Max screen is misused by Apple. It would be good to use Apple Pencil to draw or work more accurately, which could turn the phone into a complement or even a replacement for the iPad on certain occasions. The refresh rate remains at 60 Hz, with even intermediate cell phones starting to come with 90 Hz. And maybe this screen could be even bigger and foldable, right?
The camera is Max’s big point of differentiation this year, at least in theory. In relation to the iPhone 12 Pro, the giant model has a 47% larger image sensor in the main rear camera, which allows more light to enter and tends to increase the definition of the photos. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is also the only iPhone (and the only cell phone so far) to be equipped with optical sensor shift stabilization, a technology that we have only seen in DSLR cameras.
Does all this make a difference in the photos? It does, but less than some might think. Among the several identical pictures that I took with the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, I will stick to a case in which it is easier to notice the advantage of a larger sensor: I placed some objects on a shelf, left the room well dark and I only turned on a low light fixture on the right side, outside the furniture, with enough light just not to use the night mode. These were the photos:
The obvious difference is the white balance: the iPhone 12 Pro captured colder tones, with a wall tending to blue, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max went to the warmer side. This small variation is normal because we are talking about different image sensors, but it does not make a camera better or worse than another, although I prefer the more cozy scenery captured by the larger iPhone.
The noise is balanced on both models, but is slightly less on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, especially in the shadow areas, which are not receiving direct lighting, such as the drawer handle or the left side of the purple cup. There is no significant difference in noise or texture in the lightest region of the photo, such as the heart or the plant.
The definition of the iPhone 12 Pro Max was superior on the wall, which had the most preserved texture; and on the top of the green cup, which was painted more flat on the iPhone 12 Pro. But the differences in texture and sharpness on the plaque or on the trophy’s writings are basically non-existent. And all this time I spent comparing each pixel of the two photos, with 100% zoom, on a 16-inch MacBook Pro Retina display, just shows that the level between iPhones is very close.
I also remember that this comparative analysis was carried out considering a scenario that already tends to emphasize more the qualities of a larger image sensor. What if we were on a more normal occasion, with at least some natural light coming in through the window? Well, I challenge you to see the differences between these two photos and tell me in the comments:
The differences are small, but they may be important to the most detail-oriented, especially when Apple releases the ProRAW feature in an iOS update. Anyway, regardless of comparisons with other iPhones, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is an excellent camera, which takes photos with low noise, very high definition even in low light and a remarkable dynamic range.
In addition, the photographic set wins many points for consistency, delivering images of great quality right on the first click in any lighting condition, which is a merit of Apple’s post-processing features, such as Deep Fusion and Smart HDR 3 We will have a comparison soon with other expensive smartphones on the market.
The videos, which can now be recorded with Dolby Vision and 10-bit color depth, have impressive quality for a cell phone. The stabilization in the sensor works well to eliminate shaking, although it is nothing out of this world or something unattainable by other devices. The definition and dynamic range are noteworthy, especially when recording in 4K at 60 fps with HDR enabled.
All the scenes of the iPhone 12 Pro Max in this review were shot with an iPhone 12 Pro. At the moments when I appear in the video, my secondary angle was originally captured by the rear camera of the iPhone 12 Pro Max in 4K at 60 fps with Dolby Vision, with very low noise and excellent sharpness.
Hardware and battery
The performance of the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the same as the iPhone 12 Pro, but the larger model can be enjoyed for longer. Although the larger screen consumes more energy, the increase in battery capacity to 3,687 mAh is enough to offer a longer autonomy than that of the iPhone 12 Pro. And make no mistake: this apparently low number close to Androids that already exceed 5,000 mAh gives account of the errand.
In my tests with 3 hours of video playback on Netflix, an hour of web browsing and half an hour of Asphalt 9, always with maximum brightness and connected to Wi-Fi, the battery of the iPhone 12 Pro Max went from 100% to 58%. It was better than the iPhone 12 Pro, which had 51% left after testing, and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, which ended up with 49% charge. In practice, this means that Max should arrive by the end of the day with a load left for most people.
I only have one criticism: the iPhone 12 Pro Max lost 7% in nominal battery capacity compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max and became 0.7 mm thinner (that is, the difference in thickness between generations is a pencil lead) . This means that Apple could have delivered a better product than that, and honestly, I don’t think anyone asked for a slimmer smartphone with less battery.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is such an expensive product, but so expensive, that I’m even ashamed to talk about cost-benefit, because that’s not what consumers of this phone are looking for. For R $ 14 thousand in the 512 GB version, the Apple smartphone only competes directly with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. There are pros and cons in both models, but the comparison between them is difficult because the proposals are very different.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is for those who want to have the latest innovation, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max is for those looking for the best in a traditional format. Apple delivers more performance, superior cameras and a more tested and reliable design, including waterproof. Apple’s software also earns points with those who already have a Mac or iPad, considering that anyone who spends five digits on a cell phone doesn’t see much of a problem buying a $ 20,000 notebook. The only downside is that the iPhone does not fold. (Actually doubles, but only once.)
Although not a revolution, but just an improvement on what already existed, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a great product. Apple got it pretty much right in this generation and did the unbelievable: it expanded the target audience of the company’s most expensive smartphone, attracting not only those who like a big screen, but also those who care most about photo and video quality, looking for the last drop of definition and the least possible noise in a piece of equipment that fits in your pocket.
If we were in the past generation, that professional audience would already be satisfied with the iPhone 11 Pro. But to me, it seems to me that the only role of the iPhone 12 Pro this year is to convince users to buy the iPhone 12 Pro Max. to know? Whoever has all this money will not regret choosing the giant iPhone.
