Review Bluetooth headset Sennheiser Momentum 3: to appreciate every detail [análise/vídeo]

Renewed design, improved noise cancellation and handset tracking are highlights that mark the debut of the Sennheiser Momentum 3 Wireless. The new generation promises studio sound quality, being able to perfectly meet those who need a headset for professional and personal use. It even has battery for up to 17 hours of playback, NFC, equalizer application and integration with Alexa.

In Brazil, it is available for R $ 3 thousand, a little higher value when compared to some competitors. But with Sony closing its doors, is it worth it to take this model instead of the WH-1000XM4? I tested Sennheiser Momentum 3 and share my experience of use throughout this review.

Design and comfort

The Sennheiser Momentum 3 has everything you would expect from a premium headset. Its structure is formed by plastic, stainless steel and genuine leather in the bow and shells – the choice of material really pleases and the air of sophistication is felt as soon as you take the product out of the box. In comparison to Momentum 2, which has a more retro design, the adjustments in the current generation have contributed to a more modern look.

Momentum 3 weighs approximately 305 grams. Although he is bigger than the Bose QuietComfort 35 II and the Beats Studio 3 Wireless, he was not uncomfortable. The truth is that, in my case, the top of the line from Sennheiser is more comfortable than Studio 3, from Beats, which presses my head. It is worth noting that, for a better fit, it is possible to move the shells of Momentum 3 up or down.

The company placed all the manual shortcuts in the right shell: the volume, ANC, play / pause, pairing and activation buttons of the personal assistant are concentrated there. You will also find the USB-C input for power and a 3.5 mm audio input, which is always very welcome; an auxiliary cable is shipped in the box.

Finally, when you want to turn off the headphone, you just need to fold the gadget, and to turn it on, just “unfold it”. It is a practical, smart feature and it works very well. Still on portability, the company sends a nice bag for you to store your headphone.

Features and connectivity

Sennheiser did not skimp on resources and connectivity. It can activate personal assistants, chat naturally with Alexa, has multipoint connection, dedicated application, Bluetooth 5.0 and brings in its technical file the main codecs: aptX, AAC, SBC and aptX Low Latency – it is worth noting that WH-1000XM4 lost aptX, so here the model of the German company stands out in relation to its competitor.

NFC is available for you to pair handset and cell phone instantly by approximation. Sometimes, the feature can be slow: I did a communication test with a Realme 7 5G and Momentum 3 took a while to recognize the smartphone and connect. The truth is that Bluetooth 5.0 is so fast that NFC, for some people, can be a superfluous feature.

In stability, with the cell phone at a distance, I was able to walk around the house, but at certain times the phone showed vulnerability and the audio was choppy. It is not a terrible scenario, but I must say that I did not expect this limitation. Latency is low and it was possible to watch streaming movies and videos on YouTube without frowning at the delay. Both the stability test and the latency test were done with a connected iPhone 11.

I already praised the Smart Control app in the Sennheiser HD 250BT review and reinforcement: it is a straightforward app, easy to navigate and delivers great features. I can equalize, create presets and even configure active noise cancellation and transparent listening mode. It is also in Smart Control that you configure the personal assistant: pressing the pairing button, I can chat with Alexa; the feature works well, but is dependent on the official Amazon app. Finally, if you lose your headphone or if it is stolen, just use the Tile application that, for free, tracks your Momentum 3 and keeps a location history.

Sound and microphone quality

In terms of sound quality, I want to point out two things: Sennheiser Momentum 3 has a full-bodied sound with an emphasis on bass, sub-bass and midrange. The second point is that it has an impeccable sound and that it greatly values the music being played. Although he has a preference, the other frequencies have not been sacrificed. In Another Day In Paradise, Phil Collins’ vocal sounds present without being hit by the instruments. I can still appreciate the bass drum and cymbals, the keyboard, the bass, as well as the vocal backing.

Telepathy, by Kali Uchis, is an extremely corpulent song and it surprises how Momentum 3 works with this scenario. The extensive bass, from the sub-bass, is felt from beginning to end and, even with all the complexity of the track, I hear the singer and the instruments. In short, I had the feeling that I was listening to the song in a studio.

If Sennheiser Momentum 3 is a full-bodied headset, does that mean that the treble can be a hindrance? It is not quite like that. As I said, this headphone does not exclude other frequencies: for example, indie My number, by Foals, is an open song and Momentum 3 respects that, but it keeps the punches on the kick and the double bass alive. In comparison, Beats Studio 3 Wireless, which focuses on the mids and trebles, plays the same song with more originality, emphasizing the trebles. I like both proposals.

The microphone is good within limits. Audiophiles may notice the effects of compression, but you can still use it during a video call and on indoor phone calls. Fortunately, the audio is not metallic.

Noise and battery cancellation

Active noise cancellation is able to greatly reduce the noise of a high pressure cleaner and two motorcycles passing at the same time. However, I can still hear a truck passing by from a distance, and when I’m walking through the kitchen, you can hear the microwave beeping. I found the result very similar to that of Beats Studio 3 Wireless; Sennheiser doesn’t deliver super insulation, but it’s also not bad. There are two other interesting modes: one blocks wind noise and the other lowers insulation pressure.

On battery, it offers 17 hours of playback on a single charge. It is not a surprising number, considering that the Bose 700 promises 20 hours, the Beats Solo Pro, 22 hours, and the WH-1000XM4, 30 hours. In practice, I managed to leave Momentum 3 playing for 23h17min with ANC activated, therefore above the agreed. And, to save energy, when you take the headphones off, it automatically pauses the music.

Sennheiser Momentum 3: is it worth it?

The Sennheiser Momentum 3 is a great headphone for professionals and even for those who have no audiophile claims. It’s the phone I’d like to carry with me while traveling and play on I Want Your Love, from CHIC, and in Leave The Door Open, from Bruno Mars with Anderson .Paak. It has a very good sound stage. The bass is prominent and, at the same time, balanced; the mids are detailed, without embolization, and the highs have not been harmed.

After the sound, the connectivity and features offered are the highlight of the model. The NFC technology has its limitations there, but it is a differentiator, as well as the integration with the personal assistant from Amazon. The Smart Control app, as I said, was designed for the general public, but I still hope the company will add some presets developed by DJs and other audio specialists.

Even with the negative points (which are few), Sennheiser managed to deliver a great premium product and, of course, the brand charges expensive for all this. Still, if you are willing to shell out R $ 3,000 for Sennheiser Momentum 3, you will hardly regret the investment made.
