O Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite arrived in Brazil in the second half of 2020 to compete in the market with Roku Express; both sell for R $ 349. In addition to Express, the Amazon gadget competes with the Mi TV Stick and Google Chromecast. And as the name suggests, this Fire TV Stick is more basic, but brings significant improvements.
Performance has improved, the controller now has a microphone and button to trigger Alexa, and Amazon promises more than 100,000 movies and series with Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV that are on board, among others. The contents, however, are displayed in Full HD, that is, no 4K here. Does it pay off? I tested the Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite in the last few weeks and tell you all the details in this review.

O Tecnoblog is a technology-independent journalistic vehicle that helps people make their next purchase decision since 2005. Our product reviews are opinionated and have no advertising intent. For this reason, we always transparently highlight the positive and negative points of each product.
No company, manufacturer or store has paid the Tecnoblog to produce this content. Our reviews are not reviewed or approved by external agents. The Fire TV Stick Lite was provided by Amazon by donation. The product will be used in future content and will not be returned to the company.
Kit and installation
In the box, in addition to the Fire TV, Amazon sends a Bluetooth remote control accompanied by two alkaline batteries, a 149 cm USB cable, another HDMI extension cable and, finally, a 9 watt power adapter.
I already liked Fire TV Stick Basic a lot due to its practicality and this version of 2020 again earns points with me, since it is possible to install the product easily on another TV, if necessary.
To do the installation you need to connect the Fire TV Stick Lite to an HDMI input on the TV. If you have any problems with space at the rear of the equipment, just use the HDMI extender.
The USB cable is responsible for energizing the device; this power can be done through the TV’s USB-A port or use the source sent by Amazon. After that, turn on the TV and select the HDMI input.
The setup step is easy and does not take much time. As I already have an Amazon account, the procedure ended up being even faster. To work, the Fire TV Stick Lite needs to be connected to Wi-Fi – it can work with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
In addition to performance, another great novelty of this product is the remote control, which has become bigger and, fortunately, has gained microphone and integration with Alexa.
The equipment also has navigation buttons, select, return, home screen, menu, rewind, forward, play / pause and the guide. Amazon missed the opportunity to include volume and power buttons, so essential for a product like this. Unfortunately, the competition goes the same way, I say this because Roku Express also owes them.
Software and performance
The Fire TV Stick Lite has an interface that I consider excellent, even better than that of Roku. It runs Fire OS and pre-installed Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and its own browser. In fact, the contents belonging to Amazon dominate the system and, as I am a subscriber to Prime Video, all the films and series present in their catalog appear right on the home screen, as well as the productions I watched recently.
In the upper area are the menus with home page, your videos, movies, series, applications and settings, which allows you to access another screen to check all notifications, Fire TV information, change the network, Alexa accessibility settings, among others. others.
The app store is well organized and has categories such as business, communication, education, music, news and so on.
However, the Fire TV Stick Lite continues to disappoint in the list of streaming services. Some popular platforms like Globoplay and HBO GO are not available. Disney + did not appear yet while I was producing this review. You’ll find Telecine Play, Vivo Play, Looke, Plex, Vix, Spotify and Deezer. The device has 8 GB of internal memory, however, it came to me with only 4.22 GB.
The performance of the Fire TV Stick Lite caught my attention: the set-top-box works with a 1.7 GHz quad-core processor that can do the job. Amazon says it is 50% faster than the 2017 version. During my tests, in fact, I didn’t notice any unexpected crashes or closings, and navigation is very fluid.
It is possible to install paid and free games on the gadget; titles like Pac Man, Hot Wheels: Race off and Crossy Road are in the app store. Regarding performance, Asphalt 8: Airborne it ran very well without choking, but I recommend playing with a joystick, because the experience is better. Wireless mouse and keyboard can also be connected.
Speaking of control, it is now possible to use Alexa to open an application, ask for the time or temperature in a region. You can say “Alexa, look for comedies”, “open YouTube”, “play wow of Post Malone ”or ask her to play a playlist for cooking, for example.
If you are already immersed in the Amazon ecosystem, know that it is feasible to turn the TV on and off via the company’s smart speakers, just say “Alexa, turn on the TV” or “Alexa, turn off the TV”. I even managed to control the Fire TV Stick Lite with a 3rd generation Echo Dot and here this integration worked efficiently.
Finally, screen mirroring does not work well when playing games and videos on TV due to the many gagging on the image and audio. You will only have a favorable experience when transmitting static content, so it is best to consider this before purchasing the product.
As previously mentioned, the Fire TV Stick Lite displays content in Full HD, at 60 frames per second, with HDR support, delivering images with more contrasts. In configurations, when accessing the “screen and sound” menu, the user can make adjustments to video resolution, color intensity, calibrate the screen, among others.
This Fire TV Stick will meet the needs of less demanding customers without Ultra-HD TV at home, of course.
The company even sells a Fire TV 4K, but it is not yet available on Amazon do Brasil. The good news is that the company has already approved the 4K version in our country, as shown in Tecnoblog In August. But if you don’t want to wait, it might be better to move to 4K models from other brands.
Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite: is it worth it?
In relation to the Basic 2017, yes, the Fire TV Stick Lite brings considerable upgrades: the interface remains beautiful and well organized, performance has improved and control with Alexa is very welcome. Another positive point here is the possibility of connecting keyboards, mice and joysticks via Bluetooth.
Even with these great features, the product did not fully win me over. The streaming list could be more complete to compete better with Roku Express, which, in this regard, ends up taking advantage. In addition, the remote control has no volume and power buttons, and mirroring remains poor.
Finally, I think the Fire TV Stick Lite makes more sense for anyone who is already an Amazon Prime subscriber, as Prime Video and Amazon Music dominate the interface.
Three years later and the recommendation is the same: if you are aware of its limitations, then it makes sense to bet on Fire TV Stick Lite, which can be an interesting product for those who have an old TV that is not smart or that does not receive any more updates and choking.
