The PS5 or PlayStation 5 will be on the market at the end of 2020. It offers a great graphic leap forward on two editions, one of which is 100% dematerialized! Release date, price and specification sheet… We tell you everything we already know about the PS5.
The console war will take place in 2020! Microsoft will release its new machine, the Xbox Series X, which will attempt to completely shake up the market with a generation focused on services, not hardware. For his part, Sony will bet on its PS5. This console will be in line with the previous ones, Sony not wishing to upset a formula that works.
💰 What price for the PS5?
The price of the two editions of the PS5 remains a mystery. According to ex-Microsoft, Mike Ybarra, finding a price for the PS5 is much more complicated than finding a price for the Xbox Series X. A situation made difficult by very high manufacturing costs this year. The PS5 could indeed cost 450 € to manufacture.
Sony could sell its console very expensive. It wouldn’t be the first time that the price of a Playstation has surpassed the 500 euro mark. The PS3, in 2007, was sold for 600 euros when it was released. The PS2, released in 2000, was sold for 2990 francs, or 600 euros by adjusting for inflation.
Or, Sony could sell its consoles at a loss. It wouldn’t be the first time either that the manufacturer would take this risk, making a profit thanks to the games. A leak once mentioned a console sold for 499 euros (model not specified), but for now, the mystery remains unsolved.
📆 When will the PS5 launch?
Sony’s only official release date at this point is “the end of the year 2020 holiday season.”. Sony unveiled the design of its two consoles at an event webcast on June 11, 2020. Another event will take place by the end of July 2020 to announce other PS5 exclusives and maybe a few information we are missing about the console like its exact launch date and price. To believe a rumor, PS5s would launch on November 14 in Japan before a worldwide launch a week later on November 20.
🔎 What design for the PS5?
It was at the end of the June 11, 2020 conference that Sony finally unveiled the design of its new console. The PS5 adopts a futuristic look, very different from the visuals of the developer version which had leaked a few months before. The console will not have a “U-shape”, but comes in the shape of aa box arranged vertically or horizontally with rounded shapes and white and black plastic elements.
Sony also opted for a design parametric with curvaceous and rounded shapes, far from the minimalism to which the manufacturer and its competitor Microsoft have accustomed us in recent years. The design is not unanimous, but it is praised by an overwhelming majority of players. Sony is however preparing the arrival of a more discreet black model as well as a multitude of special editions in other colors. Renderings designed by fans provide a first look at the black PS5 (see video below).
As we can see in real conditions, the PS5 is much larger than other video game consoles, including previous PlayStation. Sony says it has opted for a spacious design to avoid internal components overheating issues. In addition to the official images of the console, we invite you to consult the first photo of the device leaving the factory here. It seems that thanks to removable side panels, the console will be very easy to customize.
In any case with this new design, the PS5 cultivates its difference, and that’s pretty good news!
The PS5 benefits from a new interface
A new interface will be part of the game. But it remains a mystery for now. According to Sony’s director of console interface development Matt MacLaurin, the software design of the PlayStation 5 has nothing to do with that of the PlayStation 4.
” No pixels have been kept from the old interface“, He explained during an exchange on LinkedIn where he indicated that new concepts were created for the occasion. A few days after the June 11 conference, only the welcome animation, visible each time the console is powered on, is revealed. It is relayed on Twitter by the American site The Verge.

New design of physical game boxes
Sony also took advantage of a short post on the official PlayStation blog to reveal the design of the PS5’s physical game boxes. The changes are relatively minor: the gradient blue banner in PS4 games becomes white and the logo black. The mention “OnlyOnPlayStation” disappears. And Sony is now putting its PlayStation Sudios logo on its exclusive games.
⚔ How many versions of PS5 will be released?
Sony plans to market two versions of its console : a rather classic with a record player, and the other… Without Blu-Ray drive. Called Digital Edition, this console will be entirely based on a download system. We remember the PSP Go trial that did not convince at the time. This time the market is more mature and Sony is going to give it another try.
In addition, the Digital Edition of the PS5 is reminiscent of the Xbox One S All Digital Edition, the version without optical drive of the Xbox One S and marketed in 2019. The Microsoft console so much criticized at its release will have finally done emulators at Sony. The lack of an optical drive seems to be the only difference between the two models, both in terms of hardware and design.
📄 Which technical sheet for the PS5?
Mark Cerny, chief architect of PlayStation, has already confirmed some very interesting elements of the PS5 datasheet. We learn that the console will be able to deliver graphics in 8K with Ray Tracing and 3D audio. It details as well several specific points of its technical sheet :
- AMD Ryzen 3rd Generation SoC (7nm)
- 2 to 8-core Zen CPU clocked at 3.5 GHz
- 10.28 TFLOPS AMD RDNA 2 GPU
- Ray tracing
- 16 GB of 256-bit GDDR6 RAM
- Internal storage 825 GB “ultra-fast” SSD with a 12-channel interface (5.5 GB / s Raw from 8 to 9 GB / s compressed)
- NVMe SSD slot
- Usb disk
- Revolutionary 3D audio engine
- A 4K Blu-Ray disc player
The result of integrating the 825 GB SSD is, above all, loading times of less than 1 second. Thanks to this SSD, the PS5 will process data 100 times faster than the HDD of the PS4 according to Sony. The PlayStation 5 would for example be able to load 2 GB of data in just 0.27 seconds. Gran Turismo 7 will be one of the games that will benefit the most from this reduced time (as well as other new technologies).

This transfer speed is the guarantee of more detailed graphics. Sony indeed promises a flow of more than 5 GB / sec. An Unreal Engine 5 demo shows just how detailed scenes can be on the console. Finally, we learned from Sony executives that the dematerialized part of PS5 games as well as PlayStation Now will now be based on Microsoft’s infrastructure. And this, even though the Redmond firm is about to launch xCloud outside the United States.

Note that some games will be much more expensive on PS5 than on current consoles. This is particularly the case for titles developed by 2K Sports, including NBA 2K21. It will indeed be necessary to pay 75 euros to get it.
📺 What will be the maximum definition of the PS5 games?
The information has been less or confirmed by GameStop: Sony’s new console is expected to be compatible with 8K televisions. It should therefore be able to display an image in 7680 × 4320 pixels. However, we do not know if this support will concern both games and videos (Microsoft had already done the job with 4K and its Xbox One S).
It also remains to be seen whether the games will benefit from such definition natively, or whether they will simply be upscaled and the image reworked on the fly. According to Epic Games, most of the games available at the launch of the PS5 won’t be much different from the PS4 titles. To feel a real difference, and make the most of the possibilities of the console, we will have to wait until 2021 and the availability of the Unreal Engine 5.

This is particularly the case with Fortnite, which will be powered up in the course of next year. According to Epic Games, it takes a few months for developers to grasp the console hardware properly.
Insomniac Games has also indicated that Spider-Man Miles Morales, one of the launch games, will be playable in 4K and 60 FPS under certain conditions. These conditions not being specified, we can imagine a performance mode with ray-tracing disabled to achieve this number of frames per second.
How far will Sony push backward compatibility?
Backward compatibility with PS4 games is already a given, as new Sony CEO Jim Ryan confirmed this in an interview. On the other hand, it seems that only 100 games from the PS4 catalog will be playable on PS5. According to Mark Cerny, this is a decision related to the cost of backward compatibility. It is by the way no more backward compatibility up to the PS1.
Sony also wants to avoid any generational break between the PS4 and the PS5. Sony explains that if you start a game on the PS4 you can finish it on the PS5 without starting from scratch. A player on PS5 will also be able to play with players on PS4.
However, a leak tells us that backward compatibility with the PS4 will be far from perfect at launch – and that Sony should improve things through post-launch updates. In fact, we also already know that players who opt for the PS5 Digital Edition will have to give up EA games purchased on PS4.
🎮 What does the DualSense controller on the PS5 look like?
Sony has completely revised its design and opts for two colors: white and black. However, we find the same arrangement of keys as on the DualShock controller of the PS4, i.e. 4 emblematic keys on the right side, two symmetrical analog sticks, directional arrows on the left, buttons R1 and L1, rear triggers R2 and L2 , an LED light and a large tactile zone placed in the center.
Unlike the DualShock, the controller has a USB-C port for fast charging, of a additional microphone, of a Mute button and a Create button instead of the Share button. We also know some of the technologies that Sony intends to integrate. First, the haptic feedback that would ridicule the competition. Sony would abandon its technology rumble in favor of a more precise, refined and credible return to reinforce the immersion.
L2 and R2 triggers will be adaptive, which means that publishers will be able to increase their resistance, which again increases the immersion. Sony ensures that this technology will offer new, more immersive sensations.
Jim Ryan said it himself in an interview with Business Insider Japan: “3D audio and controller haptic feedback are also things that, when you try them out, will amaze you so much they change the experience of the player. Even when playing a racing game like Grand Turismo Sport with a PlayStation 5 controller, it’s a whole different experience. Although the game runs fine with the old controller, you won’t go back after experiencing the detailed texture of a road via haptic feedback and playing with the adaptive triggers. “
Another new feature: the PS5 controller would be able to detect the heart rate and sweat of the player. Sony would thus integrate new sensors in its controllers, in order to analyze the biometric data of the palm of the user. The goal of such technological integration would be to adapt the gameplay to the state of the player. Enough to completely change the course of a video game when the user is calm or on the contrary, when he is particularly stressed.
Sony would also consider integrating a rather original feature: controller sharing. Concretely, the manufacturer wants to transform single player games into a multiplayer experience. The players could therefore share the controls of the controller via several controllers. For a fighting game for example, a player could manage the cross, round, square, triangle keys for attacks.
Another could handle movement with the joysticks while another would handle powerful shots with the triggers. Sony could also allow gamers to “pass the controller” online. A leader would determine the playing time for each of the players, and depending on their performance, the players could play for longer or shorter. In addition, this DualSense will be compatible with the PS4.
🕹 What are the official accessories for the PS5?
Sony has already unveiled some of the accessories for the PS5. The first of these is Pulse 3D headphones, specially adapted to the audio immersion designed for the console. This helmet allows gamers to feel “The sounds moving back and forth, up and down and around them”, explains Sony. In Gran Turismo 7 for example, 3D audio will allow players to spot the position of other cars on the pavement.
There is also an elegant white and black charging station capable of charging up to two DualSense controllers simultaneously. There is also the HD Camera, a kind of webcam capable of streaming a 1080p video stream. We also note that the device has two lenses, a sign that the accessory can probably understand the volumes (but this remains to be confirmed).
Finally, the PS5 is also entitled to a remote control to control Blu Ray and DVD playback or movies and series on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.
🥽 PSVR 2: virtual reality also on the program?
With the Playstation VR (PSVR), Sony has become the first console maker to launch into virtual reality, but there is still a long way to go to deliver something truly powerful. Right now, the system is worse off than the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The problem is, the PSVR is already pushing the PS4 Pro spec sheet to its limits.
The Japanese manufacturer should improve all this. The PSVR2 would have two front cameras and a rear camera. The device would also benefit from a transparent screen, which would prevent the player from being completely cut off from the world before starting a game. And quite naturally, when the game starts, the screen darkens accordingly to completely immerse the player in their game.
The most optimistic specialists hope for a 4K image per eye (8K in total). But it may still be too early for such a technological breakthrough. We can also hope for quality controllers and a Room Scale no longer based on the camera, but on real, more precise sensors. A patent also tells us that Sony is preparing a new PS Move. However, it is not certain that Sony is launching the new version of the PSVR at the same time as the PS5.
