On the occasion of the traditional Snapdragon Tech Summit, Qualcomm presented its new high-end SoC. It is not called Snapdragon 875 as rumors asserted, but Snapdragon 888. A more symbolic choice than technical, since the new component takes the fundamentals of the Snapdragon 865. Explanations.
Today took place the first Qualcomm keynote organized on the occasion of the Snapdragon Tech Summit 2020. This large annual conference of the Californian founder is each year the opportunity to discover the component that will animate smartphones (and some tablets) high range the following year. This year, health conditions are preventing Qualcomm from holding its conference in Hawaii. The 2020 edition is therefore virtual, with talks broadcast on the Qualcomm website, on Twitter and on YouTube.

We therefore followed the opening keynote of the Snapdragon Tech Summit 2020 in order to know the successor to the Snapdragon 865. Our expectations were, in part, fulfilled. Partly because Qualcomm has clearly revealed the identity of its high-end SoC, as well as its main manufacturer partners.
This is’Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Sharp, Motorola, Meizu, Black Shark, Nubia, Realme, LG, Asus or ZTE. In short, beautiful people. Among the models that should benefit from it include the OnePlus 9 and the Mi 11. In this long list, Samsung is not present, while the US version of the Galaxy S21 should benefit (in Europe we will certainly have an Exynos ).
However, Qualcomm did not detail all the technical information about its new SoC. This will be the subject of a second keynote which will take place tomorrow at the same time. So it’s only a postponement.
The Snapdragon 888 is equipped with the Snapdragon X60 modem
What information is already official? First, the name of the SoC. His name is Snapdragon 888. Contrary to rumors, he will therefore not name Snapdragon 875. Qualcomm explains that the name change is above all symbolic: the number 8 is important for IT professionals (it is the number of bits in a byte). This, however, has no technical significance, unlike the switch between the Snapdragon 820 and the Snapdragon 835 (when the 800 range went from 4 to 8 cores).
Second official information, the Snapdragon 888 benefits from the latest 5G modem, the Snapdragon X60, replacing the Snapdragon X55. It is a modem compatible with the vast majority of frequency bands used for 5G, whether they are millimeter or less than 6 GHz, whether they are SA or NSA. The Snapdragon X60 can integrate multiple 5G SIM cards in a multi-SIM configuration (and no longer a single 5G card and one or two 4G cards).
More power for games, photography and artificial intelligence
Other official information, the Snapdragon 888 incorporates a new Spectra image processor. The benchmark is yet to be revealed, but this one should be much faster (35% more computing power compared to Spectra 480 of the Snapdragon 865). An interesting figure: the new Spectra could capture 120 photos per second in 12 megapixels.
While Qualcomm has not detailed the performance of the new Adreno GPU of the Snapdragon 888, the founder confirms that it is compatible Snapdragon Elite Gaming. This means that the drivers for the integrated graphics card can be updated. The firm also promises a sharp increase in performance, as has been mentioned in previous rumors. To find out more, we will certainly have to wait for Wednesday’s keynote.
The same goes for Hexagon, the coprocessor dedicated to artificial intelligence. The Snapdragon 888 will benefit from a new generation of this component (the sixth) which promises better energy efficiency and increasingly deeper contextual interactions. An interesting figure: the new Hexagon would be able to handle 26 teroperations per second, compared to 15 teroperations per second for the Hexagon 698 that you find in the Snapdragon 865.
An ad that looks like a teaser
There are still many details to be discovered about this chipset. The nature of these application cores. Its GPU. The performance of its Spectra and Hexagon components. Its connectivity (WiFi and Bluetooth). The nature of its built-in RAM. As well as the smoothness of its engraving, even if there is no doubt that it is engraved in 5 nm (because Apple with the A14 Bionic, Samsung with the Exynos 1080 and Huawei with the Kirin 9000 are already there. ).
