Qualcomm announced an as-yet-unnamed smartphone, but aimed at the Snapdragon Insiders community, where the company’s goal is to deliver the Snapdragon 888 chip with 5G modem more or less directly to customers – with help from Asus. The device also has a 6.78-inch screen, 16GB of RAM and delivers a completely wireless headset in the box, as well as a charger compatible with Quick Charge 5.0.
Do you know the cell phones created by Google and manufactured by a partner company, such as Pixel and Nexus? So, Qualcomm decided to follow a similar path by calling the Taiwanese Asus to put the pieces chosen by the American chip company in a smartphone without an official name. It is aimed at Snapdragon Insiders, fans of the brand present in a community created by the company itself.
The device is not the most attractive on the outside, but it promises to be the maximum example of what consumers expect from a cell phone with a high-end chip for this year, or at least until December, when the same Qualcomm must present its successor.
On the outside the user finds a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen, with support for HDR10 and HDR10+, Gorilla Glass Victus protection, 144 Hz refresh rate and generous edges for today’s powerful and expensive cell phone standard. Looking closer, it’s possible to find similarities between this smartphone and the ROG Phone 5 – apart from items like the side USB ports, touch-sensitive buttons on the side and gamer look.
Inside is the main attraction of the cell phone: the Snapdragon 888 with 5G modem, delivering 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage, helping the work of the Adreno 660 graphics card.
The cameras are arranged in a triple set of lenses, being the main sensor with 64 megapixels for photos, another with 12 megapixels for images in ultrawide and another one with 8 megapixels with the objective of approaching the photographed object in three times. This pack is also capable of shooting up to 8K at 30 frames per second, or 4K at 60 fps.
Asus will sell, distribute and update the phone
A virtually unmodified Android 11 is present, powered by a 4,000 mAh battery. There is still no official company position for Qualcomm’s phone update time, but we know that this work is in the hands of Asus and the Taiwanese brand usually puts between one and two major OS version updates on their devices.
In addition to updating and manufacturing, the sale and distribution of dcellular is the responsibility of Asus – Qualcomm seems to have come in with little more than the name and technologies in this device.
When and how much?
Qualcomm’s smartphone won’t be cheap, something to be expected for such powerful specs. The suggested price for this cell phone is set at US$ 1,499 and it will initially be sold in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, South Korea, Japan, China and India, with release scheduled for August this year.
