The highly anticipated Volkswagen ID.3 is finally hitting the market. Compact and 100% electric, it marks a turning point in the strategy of the German brand. Price, range, performance… it’s time to take stock of everything the vehicle has to offer.
We’ve been waiting for years, the ambitious compact 100% electric Volkswagen finally shows the tip of his nose. The German manufacturer presented a concept of the ID.3 at the Paris Motor Show in October 2016. Then we had to wait nearly three to see a first glimpse of the finished product, during the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) 2019 from Frankfurt. And finally in June 2020, Volkswagen communicated the terms of its release in France.
The opportunity to return to this dossier on everything there is to know about the new VW-stamped electric car: equipment, prices, deliveries, range, battery, performance, technical sheet …
If it is observed with such attention, it is because the ID.3 is the very first 100% electric car from Volkswagen specially designed for the electric and which does not take again the bases laid by thermal models, like the e-Golf, a simple derivative of Golf. The German group has announced high ambitions in the electric market, so let’s see if it can afford it with this vehicle.
📆 When is the Volkswagen ID.3 released?
The Volkswagen ID.3 will initially be available to customers who have made a pre-reservation. They already have the possibility of ordering the electric car, which will be delivered from September 2020. But beware, the first batch of vehicles is made up of private models with certain features, which are part of a special launch edition soberly called “1st”: ID.3 1st, ID.3 1st + and ID.3 1st Max. They will benefit from an update in early 2021 to be upgraded. Consumers who had booked have up to July 8 to confirm to the manufacturer that they wish to acquire the vehicle. After this date, the manufacturer will begin contacting users who were on the waiting list.
The versions of the Volkswagen ID.3 directly benefiting from all the technologies will arrive on the market in spring 2021. The brand has yet to confirm all the details on this subject. The bottom line, then, is that you have no way of buying the Volkswagen ID.3 if you haven’t taken advantage of the preservations. The situation will not settle down until next year.

💰 How much does the Volkswagen ID.3 cost?
As explained previously, only three models are currently marketed in France, for which Volkswagen has communicated the official prices. We do not yet know the prices that will be practical for future versions.
- Volkswagen ID.3 1st: 39,990 euros
- Volkswagen ID.3 1st +: 44,990 euros
- Volkswagen ID.3 1st Max: 49,990 euros
Here are the prices displayed by the manufacturer. But as you probably know, you can get state financial aid in the form of an environmental bonus for the purchase of an electric vehicle. The amount of this aid is in this case 7000 euros for the first two models and 3000 euros for the last. The value of the bonus has recently been increased: it is an amount of 7,000 euros for a new electric vehicle sold for less than 45,000 euros and 3,000 euros for a vehicle marketed for an amount between 45,000 and 60,000 euros.
You can therefore acquire by counting the bonus the Volkswagen ID.3 1st for 32,990 euros, the Volkswagen ID.3 1st + for 37,990 euros and the Volkswagen ID.3 1st Max for 46,990 euros.
Another option is long-term rental (LLD). The Volkswagen ID.3 1st is available in this way from 279 euros per month, the Volkswagen ID.3 1st + from 359 euros per month and the Volkswagen ID.3 1st Max from 579 euros per month (offer long-term rental over 37 months and 30,000 kilometers with first rent of 10,000 euros reduced to 3,000 euros after deduction of the ecological bonus for ID.3 1st and ID.3 1st + or first rent of 6,000 euros reduced to 3,000 euros in the case of the ID.3 1st Max).
According to a study by ADAC, the Volkswagen ID.3 is less expensive to use than the Tesla Model 3 and Nissan Leaf. After 5 years on the road, it only comes back to 0.416 € / km. For its part, the Model 3 climbs to € 0.525 / km and the Leaf to € 0.474 / km. This calculation takes into account regular maintenance, insurance, cleaning, purchase premiums implemented by Germany, energy consumption or the inherent loss of value.
🔋 What is the range of the Volkswagen electric car?
Three battery configurations will be available for the Volkswagen ID.3:
- Drums 45 kWh offering up 330 kilometers of autonomy. According to the manufacturer, 80% of drivers will be able to travel 230 to 330 kilometers with a load.
- Drums 58 kWh offering up 424 kilometers of autonomy. According to the manufacturer, 80% of drivers will be able to travel 300 to 420 kilometers with a load.
- Drums 77 kWh offering up 550 kilometers of autonomy. According to the manufacturer, 80% of drivers will be able to travel 390 to 550 kilometers with one load.
Theoretical autonomy was measured according to the WLTP cycle test procedure (Worlwide harmonized Light vehicle Test Procedure), the new standard in this area replacing the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle).
Note that for urban use and respecting the principles ofeco driving (a way of driving that promotes energy savings: no sudden acceleration and braking, speed adjustment, vehicle maintenance, etc.), drivers can exceed the range announced by the manufacturer.
The capacity of the batteries, which are integrated into the vehicle floor, is here expressed in useful value, that is to say that their real capacity is greater, but part of it is not exploited to avoid their deterioration or heating.
For the Volkswagen ID.3 1st, the only ones available at the moment, there is no battery choice. The models necessarily carry a 58 kWh battery.
⌚ How long does the recharge take?
To recharge the battery, the Volkswagen ID.3 offers an AC charger that can support up to 11 kWh, allowing the 58 kWh battery of a Volkswagen ID.3 1st of 20 to 80% in 3h30 and from 0 to 100% in 5h30 if all the conditions are met at the level of the infrastructure plug. But to take advantage of this, you need a three-phase connection, rare in homes and more generally found in businesses. In single-phase, the charging power reaches 7.4 kWh, enough to go from 20 to 80% in 5 hours and from 0 to 100% in 8 hours. Of course, the performance on a more traditional plug is well below and depending on your consumption, a night of charging may not be enough to ride in peace the next day. Not surprisingly, it’s the same catchphrase on all electric cars. Volkswagen is marketing its Elvi charging station with installation kit at a price of 1,599 euros (1,810 euros for the Elvi Charger Pro, which notably adds support for three-phase).
But the ID.3 is also compatible with fast charging stations. For the three 1st models, it is possible to recover 290 kilometers of range in 30 minutes of charging on a terminal delivering a power of 100 kWh. On future references to come, vehicles equipped with a “small” 45 kWh battery will also be able to benefit from such a speed. If you opt for the larger capacity (77 kWh), your vehicle will even be able to support a load of 125 kWh. But we must therefore wait until 2021 to be entitled to it.
As a reminder, Volkswagen’s electric cars will be able to use the program’s network of charging stations. Ionity, whose objective is the rapid expansion of the number of public chargers in Europe. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Hyundai and the other brands of the VW group (Audi and Porsche) are also part of this unified network project aimed at competing with Tesla Superchargers.
🛠 What is the engine type?
The Volkswagen ID.3 engine is attached to the rear axle (axle) of the car. Whatever the model, it is powered by a power of 150 kWh, which corresponds to 204 horses. The torque is 310 Newton Meter (Nm). Are announced a top speed of 160 km / h, an acceleration 0 to 100 km / h in 7.3 seconds and 0-60 km / h acceleration in 3.5 seconds.
But while the above indications are interesting for giving an idea of the vehicle’s potential in terms of performance, nothing beats feedback to judge the sensations provided and the feelings. That’s great, we were able to get our hands on the Volkswagen ID.3 ourselves after its official presentation at the end of 2019. Watch our video on the subject to find out more.
According to a rumor relayed on the Internet at the beginning of July 2020, Volkswagen is considering producing a more powerful version of the ID.3. Nicknamed “ID.3 R”, a reference to the sporty single-seater ID R. This version would be fitted with an engine offering more power than the ID.3 1st. Rumors have it that the automaker’s goal is to achieve 220 kW of power (or the equivalent of 300 horsepower for a heat engine) with a single engine.
🎁 What is the equipment of the ID.3?
The Volkswagen ID.3 is equipped with a 10 inch central touch screen on the dashboard, which displays vehicle and driving information and data. It also serves as a hub for controlling media (including music), handling phone calls or browsing, and finding the nearest public charger. The augmented reality head-up display (exclusive to ID.3 1st Max) projects useful information onto the windshield. They appear in the driver’s field of vision so that he can stay focused on the road while watching the speed at which he is driving, checking the speed limit on the section taken or taking a look at the indications of the navigation system.
We are used to “Ok Google”, “Alexa” and “Hey Siri”, Volkswagen adds the “Hello ID. »To control his car by voice. Start a route, play a playlist, take or make a call … no more need for a touch screen and even fewer physical buttons to do so.
Volkswagen also offers smart lighting technology ID.Light. This is not about lighting the interior, but a visual communication medium with the driver, which supports certain information without molesting with overly stressful signals. Inform that the car has been locked or unlocked, recommend a lane change. ID.Light also works with voice commands, and plays on the colors of the light: green for a fully charged battery, red to indicate a warning. Another way for the vehicle to interact and inform the driver.
In bulk, we also find a DAB + digital radio, Air Care Climatronic air conditioning with dual zone adjustment, as well as front seats (each with an armrest) and a heated multifunction steering wheel. The Light Assist is also present to be able to stay on high beam continuously at night without having to change lights manually each time you pass another vehicle in front, the light beam being automatically redirected.
The ID.3 1st is fitted with 18 inch alloy wheels, the ID.3 1st + with 19 inch alloy wheels and the ID.3 1st Max with 20 inch alloy wheels. Regarding the interior upholstery, it is imposed on the ID.3 1st with designer fabric “fragment”. On ID.3 1st +, we are entitled to a customizable “Style” interior with three color options with fabric upholstery, velvet art and imitation leather in “flow” design. Finally for the Max version, the ash gray and black “Style Plus” interior abandons the fabric to make room only for velvet art and imitation leather with a “flow” design.

They just need to be close to the car, no need to take them out of pockets or a bag. There are also the presence of LED brake lights with dynamic flashing and the rear windows and the rear screen darkened.
On the ID.3 1st Max, in addition to the features already integrated in the ID.3 1st and ID.3 1st +, we are entitled to options that tend a little more towards the top of the line, including seats with electric adjustment (height, tilt, depth) and a massage function available for the front seats. The audio system is also more complete, this model incorporating two additional speakers. The panoramic roof mentioned earlier is standard on this model. An induction charger is available to recharge your smartphone without having to connect it to a USB port or to a cigarette lighter. Finally, the Travel Assist driving assistance, Side Assist lane change assistance and Emergency Assist features are integrated.
The ID.3 is also set to evolve, both thanks to software updates and new features introduced in future editions. Ultimately, it will benefit from autonomous driving features thanks to Pilot ID, an equivalent of Tesla’s Autopilot. But the American manufacturer is well ahead in this area and Volkswagen should not be ready to deploy such a service before 2025.
🚘 What does ID.3 look like? What are its weight and dimensions?
Volkswagen is renowned for prioritizing efficiency over originality, the German manufacturer proves once again with the most sober ID.3.
Satisfied with the format of its Golfs in the compact segment, the brand was inspired by its ID.3. We are thus dealing with dimensions of 4.26 meters in length, 1.81 m wide and 1.57 m high. The curb weight is 1,794 kilograms (with 58 kWh battery). Its authorized total weight reaches 2260 kilograms. The turning circle is 10.2 meters, which is quite a good point for urban maneuvers.
The trunk volume raised bench is 385 liters. Bench folded down, we go to 1267 liters. This is therefore very slightly higher than what we find on the latest Golf courses, to give you a point of comparison.
For the exterior, four colors are available: Glacier White (Metallic), Manganese Gray (Metallic), Lunar Gray (Opaque) and Maui Turquoise (Metallic).
