Samsung has just unveiled the Galaxy A52, A52 5G and A72. We were able to take them in hand during a quick session in the Parisian premises of the South Korean brand. Here are our first impressions while we wait for our big full test of Samsung’s new midrange.
The new mid-range smartphones signed Samsung are finally here. And for the occasion, it is not one or two models that the South Korean brand is marketing, but three at a time. Their name is Galaxy A52, A52 5G and A72, and have almost everything to seduce. Four photo sensors on the back, an optical zoom x3 depending on the model, a Super Amoled Full HD + screen that takes advantage ofa refresh rate of 90 or 120 Hz, a microSD port, a 25W fast charge… All at a price below € 500, or even below € 400 in the case of the A52.
In short, the three smartphones in the Galaxy A range have something to satisfy all desires, all needs. Before being able to test them completely, we were able to take them in hand during a 2-hour session organized by Samsung. Here are our first impressions of the Galaxy A52, A52 5G and A72, three models that each have their own specificities and many assets in their pockets.
Samsung Galaxy A52 and A52 5G: the similarities
Very few elements differ between the A52 and A52 5G. Both benefit from the same screen size, the same front and rear photo sensors, the same storage capacity and the amount of RAM. On the other hand, as the name suggests, one is 5G and the other is not. And there are other differences, which we will see a little later.
But let’s start from the beginning: both models benefit from a screen size of 6.5 ″ and Gorilla Glass 5. The fingerprint sensor is housed under the screen, but does not work at home. Ultrasound help as on the Galaxy S range (you can’t have everything). It is therefore a little slower, but still offers excellent responsiveness according to our first tests.
There is also on the front face a small photo sensor housed in a small punch, photo sensor that allows you to capture selfies in 32 MP. Let’s continue on the part of the two models, since at the rear we benefit from a main sensor of 64 MP (set by default to 12 MP), an ultra-wide-angle sensor of 12 MP, another dedicated to the mode portrait in 5 MP and a last of 5 MP for the macro. Good point: we take advantage of stabilization on the main 64 MP sensor and an action cam mode in video, which is rather rare for a phone under € 400.
In terms of autonomy, there is a 4500 mAh battery and a 15 W charger in the box. Both devices are nevertheless capable of supporting a fast charge at 25 W.
Let’s talk about design now. At the rear, the A52 and A52 5G both feature a matte back. Four colors are available: blue, black, white or lavender. The blue model is the one that immediately caught our eye, followed closely by the white model. The black model is all it has more classic (having a matte back avoids fingerprints, which is a good thing for this color). As for the lavender version, it left us unmoved, but it’s only a matter of taste.
Samsung Galaxy A52 and A52 5G: the differences
So what are the differences between the A52 and the A52 5G? There are three of them. On the one hand, we find a Snapdragon 720G on the A52, while the A52 5G benefits from a more powerful SoC, namely a Snapdragon 750G. On the other hand, and as its name suggests, the model equipped with the 750G is ready for 5G, which is not the case with the less expensive model.
Last change: the A52 has a refresh rate of 90 Hz, while that of the A52 5G goes up to 120 Hz. In both cases, we enjoy better fluidity when we scroll the screen from above downstairs, or in games that support such a refresh rate. Note on the other hand that, for the A52 as for the A52 5G, the frequency is not adaptive. While it is possible to switch to 60 Hz to increase the autonomy of the smartphone, the refresh rate does not adapt to the application displayed on the screen.
Samsung galaxy a72
The Samsung Galaxy A72 inherits the same components as the A52: it too pulsates using a Snapdragon 720G and it too is equipped with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage space (expandable to 1 TB thanks to microSD support). The design of the A72 is also similar to that of its little brother. However, it is a little bigger, going from 6.5 ″ in the case of the A52, to 6.8 ″ in that of the A72. Another notable difference: the device benefits from a 5000 mAh battery, against 4500 for that of the A52 and A52 5G.
At the front, its photo sensor is identical to that of the A52. On the other hand, at the rear, there is a difference in size. If 3 of the 4 sensors are identical to those of the A52, the A72 says goodbye to the sensor dedicated to portrait mode. In compensation, it benefits from an optical zoom x3 of 8 MP, a feature that we see only too rarely on the mid-range.
For the rest, there is no other change. The fingerprint sensor is still located under the screen, the refresh rate of the latter is also set at 90 Hz, and we still benefit from 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Finally, something we haven’t mentioned yet: like the A52 and A52 5G, the Galaxy A72 is also IP67 certified. It is therefore also capable of withstanding 30 minutes of immersion at a depth of 1 meter.
Our first impressions of the A52, A52 5G and A72
As mentioned in the introduction, after having “played” with the 3 smartphones for 2 hours, it is likely that they will obtain our favors during our tests. The first indicators are green, for now. The design of the 3 models is rather pleasant to the touch, they are well balanced on the top and bottom and the compactness of the A52s should delight fans of small smartphones (although in this small game, we prefer the Galaxy S21 with its size of only 6.2 ″). On the other hand, the black borders on the screen seemed to us a little bigger than usual on this kind of smartphone.
If we were not able to bencher the various smartphones as it should be, we nevertheless took some photos on the spot. No real surprise: the rear sensors do their job very well and taking advantage ofa x3 optical zoom on the A72 is a definite plus. We would have liked to take advantage of it on the A52, rather than having a sensor dedicated to portrait mode, but this is perhaps only a matter of taste. Special mention for the 32 MP front sensor, which seems to offer very good shots, at least on the few photos we took when we got started.
The 3 smartphones will be offered at the following prices in France:
- Samsung Galaxy A52 = 379 €
- Samsung Galaxy A52 5G = 449 €
- Samsung Galaxy A72 = 479 €
And if you order before April 7, you can get white Galaxy Buds + for free. With this price list, there is no doubt: Samsung is doing it again and is attacking the mid-range smartphone market head-on with aggressive prices. The main advantage of these smartphones is that they inherit most of the innovations reserved for premium models that are the Galaxy S … With only one year of difference.
On the performance side, we already know what to expect: the Snapdragon 720G was already fitted to the Redmi Note 9 Pro, there shouldn’t be any big surprises. On the other hand, on the 750G side, it is the great unknown for the moment, even if there is a good chance that the SoC will allow the A72 to be classified at the top of the basket for the mid-range.
The autonomy management, which did not disappoint us on the A51 and A72, also promises to be good. We just hope that the speed of 90 Hz or 120 Hz does not impact the battery over the day, especially since it is not adaptive (those who own a Galaxy S20 know a thing about this. ).
But in the end, there is a good chance that these new iterations of the Galaxy A series will become the new benchmark in the category of smartphones under 500 €. We can’t wait for our full tests!
