Xiaomi does not fall asleep on its laurels, it is not really the kind of home and presented this summer three new scooters: the Essential that we have already tested, the 1S and the Pro 2 that you have had the chance to use for a few weeks. Our verdict!
Test performed by Emmanuel Armanet
Xiaomi has strongly marked the explosion of the phenomenon of electric scooters in France with his M365. An iconic model that we really come across on every street corner. Since water has flowed under the bridges, the market has matured and the Chinese brand has since launched a Pro version with a beautiful screen that was also successful.
But when a market matures, this almost always results in its segmentation: brands must expand their range in order to meet all needs and especially all budgets. Electric scooters are no exception to the rule and Xiaomi offers three new scooters of which we invite you to discover with us the most high-end model: the Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 which arrives on the market at the official price of 499 €.
More than a family resemblance
The first observation will be the same as for the Mi Electric Scooter Essential: the newcomer is aesthetically very close to the models of the previous generation. The design therefore appears identical with a matte black paint of robust appearance simply enhanced with a few red details such as on the wheel rims and red reflectors which are simply mandatory from a legislative point of view. The aluminum frame uses the same folding system as the M365 and the whole has a IP54 certification : it is therefore possible to ride in the rain without fear.
Assembly only takes a few minutes : Xiaomi provides an Allen key for the screws to secure the stem / handlebar unit to the long head tube. It’s time to put the Pro 2 on charge. It was also an opportunity to take a quick tour of the owner while checking that the various accessible bolts are properly tightened. 8.5-inch wheels accommodate conventional tires, that is, with an inner tube. Compared to solid tires, there is of course a risk of puncture, but it brings increased comfort and improved road holding by providing better grip.
Indeed, Xiaomi continues in the same vein: no suspension on the Pro 2. An option that can be understood, because a suspension system necessarily weighs down the scooter and constitutes a potential source of breakdown. However, the brand has reworked the rear part to offer greater reliability. The attachment of the mudguard is reinforced with a bar which connects it to the hub while the rear light wiring now passes through a hard plastic groove which protects it from gravel projections, but also from water. Also at the rear is a disc brake using a mechanical caliper.
A powerful motor and a large battery
The motor always takes place in the front wheel. On this high-end version, it displays a power of 300 W (250 W for the Essential) and even 600 W peak. What to reach a speed of 25 km / h and especially climb slopes of up to 20%. This engine relies on a large battery with a capacity of 446 Wh, more than double that of the Mi Electric Scooter Essential. This battery placed under the deck is managed by a BSM of 5e generation.
This Battery System Management deploys no less than 6 protections so that the scooter battery is the most durable and efficient over time. Xiaomi announces a range of 45 km against 20 km for the Essential. Of course, the Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 has braking energy recovery technology: in short, the energy produced by braking or at least deceleration is fed back into the battery of the scooter.
This is akin to using an engine brake, the force of which can be adjusted through the in-house application. Xiaomi operates this system in conjunction with the disc brake operated by a conventional lever by the driver. The idea is to end up with an e-ABS: the two devices kick in one after the other to produce efficient braking without locking up.
Three levels of assistance are offered: pedestrian mode (0-5 km / h), standard mode (0-20 km / h) and sport mode (0-25 km / h). Switching from one mode to the other is done by pressing the central button twice above the stem. The active position will also be displayed on the screen apparently taken from the Mi Scooter Pro. Other information is of course displayed: instantaneous speed, battery charge level, etc. This screen is easy to read. Note that its brightness automatically drops when the user turns on the lights of the scooter.
Exemplary handling and braking
Well, it’s high time to take on the streets of Paris for our first journey that takes us from Boulogne to Gare du Nord, almost 12 km spent mainly on cycle paths. First observation, you immediately feel at ease on the Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2. The position is classic, the deck spacious enough to accommodate our pair of sneakers in size 45 and the handles for the less comfortable. Orders naturally fall to hand. Special mention for the trigger which allows precise adjustment of the acceleration.
The recovery set in the medium position through the application allows ride, rarely touching the conventional brake, provided you anticipate of course. In case of immediate danger, do not worry: the rear disc brake is very powerful. Combined with the engine braking by e-ABS, it stops the machine in about 8 m. A great performance. Of course, we mainly drove in Sport mode, we don’t change, and in these conditions the acceleration is clear without being brutal.
We reach 23 km / h very quickly, but to go up to 25 km / h, a little patience is necessary. The kilometers go by and feeling confident we take advantage of an empty portion of the cycle path to test the course of the Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2. She is simply excellent. The tires offer good grip even on wet asphalt portions and it is possible to position the scooter to the nearest centimeter. Of course, this is not an ultra-sporty model, but it can be handled just as smoothly as it is more brutally. In all cases, it ensures!
The slope does not scare him
We couldn’t resist the urge to go face the slopes the extremes of the capital: direction Montmartre. The difference with the Essential is obvious: the Pro 2 goes much further. Of course, our 80 kg sometimes got the better of the engine’s goodwill, but on the whole the false dishes are swallowed with little loss of speed. For steeper slopes, once again you have to anticipate a bit and with the momentum it is a good bet that you will reach the top.
The question of autonomy is always very delicate. In sport mode, we have exceeded 30 km on a course with a long false flat. So are the 45 km promised by the brand utopian? No doubt, but it is certainly possible to get closer to the 40 km by playing a lot with energy recovery and weighing only sixty kilos.
So, is this Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 perfect? Almost indeed, but it does not escape criticism on a few points. First of all with its 14.2 kg on the scale, she is rather heavy. You don’t feel that weight while riding, but when it comes to carrying it there things get a bit messy. Sweaty sessions guaranteed when it comes to battling the endless marches of some metro stations. In addition, its rather basic folding system in the end results in a rather bulky scooter, especially in crowded corridors.
A small point about the connected aspect of the Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2. The manufacturer has chosen not to offer an app dedicated to its scooters, but on the contrary to integrate them into the global universe of the brand’s products. . So everything happens in the same application, Mi Home, in which we will also find the controlled bulbs, security cameras, air purifiers, robot vacuum cleaners …
A happy pandemonium therefore for an application that will ultimately be used relatively little once a few basic adjustments have been made: power of energy recovery, possible implementation of an unlock code or even a firmware update.
