our full opinion and our conclusions on the connected bracelet

For its first connected bracelet, Oppo is betting on design and simplicity, while including the main functions expected on this type of device. Faced with stiff competition, can this choice be enough to convince users?

Test carried out by Alix Denoyers

After a remarkable entry into connected watches with the launch of a Watch under Wear OS – which is not so often -, Oppo markets its first connected bracelet in France. With a design similar to that of the Xiaomi Mi Bands which have established themselves on the market by their excellent value for money, the Oppo Band promises like its many competitors to improve your well-being through many functions. . If the manufacturer has not given originality in the name, the design, the equipment and the performance of this new bracelet are supposed to make the difference. LCan Oppo Band shake the competition? This is what we are going to show you, after an intensive ten-day test.

Pricing and availability

Offered in a packaging that is both simple and elegant, the novelty of Oppo consists, under the name Oppo Band Style in France, of’A removable smart module accompanied by two bracelets, one called Style, the other Sport. A USB charging station, a quick start guide and a safety guide complete the package.

Oppo Band packaging

After being made official at the end of March, this product has been on sale for a few days at the price of 59.99 euros in two versions, one with a Style bracelet black color, the other in vanilla tint (White cream). The Sport bracelet remains in both cases black.

Oppo Band vanilla

A few months ago, the leaks gave hope for lower prices with a product available in several versions, a Sport tracker around 25 euros and a more fashionable model at 30 euros in particular. It will ultimately be a set of two bracelets for around sixty euros. As a result, it is less easy to stand out from the Chinese competition which currently offers its products around 30-35 euros like the Xiaomi Mi Band 5 or the Honor Band 5. You have to look for the American Fitbit to find really more expensive bracelets (a hundred euros for the Inspire 2).

An activity tracker, two styles to choose from

This is the originality of Oppo Band Style! In addition to classic characteristics, there is a little extra that could appeal to lovers of differentiating accessories. In addition to the traditional elastomer strap common to all manufacturers (see above), certainly comfortable to wear and undeniably solid in the context of a sporting activity, we discover a second bracelet with a slightly more original design. It consists of a metal buckle in which you can clip / unclip the smart module at will (see below).

Oppo Band design

We will not hide from you that’You have to be particularly meticulous when it comes to hanging up, under penalty of losing his tracker. In addition, when you attach one or the other bracelet to your wrist, you can see that the system adopted by Oppo (also found on the Mi Smart Band 5) is a challenge to complete.

Oppo Band attaches

At least it has the advantage of holding on well, but we would have preferred a more classic attachment system, just like any watch. We would also have appreciated more varied colors. There is only one alternative, a Style bracelet in creamy white (vanilla), which in the photo looks more original and elegant than black.

Oppo Band colors

There is obviously a Lavender Sport model, but it seems to have been reserved for other countries. Pity.

An (almost) flawless Amoled screen

Like a Mi Band 5, the Oppo Band is equipped with a 1.1 small AMOLED display inch at the same resolution (291 dpi), more than enough to read the 50 characters that can be displayed. For outdoor use, however, you will have to manually push the brightness up – in the absence of automatic mode – for a chance to distinguish the lowercase characters accompanying your sporting exploits during exercise.

Oppo Band characters

It would have been better on the outside activities of limit the display to 1 or 2 information per screen (the distance alone, even the pulse), even if it means scrolling through the screens, rather than housing 3 to 4 on one. Suffice to say that you will wait for your return home to discover your performance. Fortunately, it is possible to set a vibration alert when your heart rate exceeds a certain threshold.

Ergonomics: a 100% tactile tracker reserved for the Android world

Completely button-free Whether it’s power or menu, the Oppo Band can be used exclusively through touch-based navigation. The screen is very responsive from this point of view and the operations are relatively intuitive – fortunately, since the help is limited to 4 or 5 points mentioned in the printed guide and included in the tips section of the app. We have seen better or we have not been able to find a complete guide. In the event of a problem, you can always contact Oppo support, via the manufacturer’s website (free number, chat, etc.). If you ever turn off the bracelet from the settings section, make sure you have the charger handy. If there was no On / Off button, you couldn’t turn it back on. All tactile sometimes has its limits, but this problem is recurrent, regardless of the manufacturer, on small bracelets of this type.

Oppo Band waterproof

The pairing of the bracelet with a smartphone is carried out without encountering any particular problem once the Oppo band is sufficiently charged and the application has been downloaded Hey Tap Health from the manufacturer. Then just follow the instructions to establish the Bluetooth connection (5.0). Details that this app only works with Android mobiles, from version 6. iPhone users will have to go their own way, information that it would be useful to include on the packaging.

Functions: when the essential is too little

To face its main rivals, the Oppo band offers its owner everything he is entitled to expect from an activity tracker sold for a few tens of euros. Under the smart module, we discover a heart rate monitor accompanied by a oximeter. These two sensors make it possible to measure the heart rate and the oxygen level in the blood (occasionally or continuously), two essential functions for monitoring sports activities and relevant sleep.

Oppo Band heart rate monitor

GPS is not integrated at this price level – this is usual – you will have to practice walking or running while carrying your smartphone, synchronized with the Band, to obtain a perfectly geolocated route of your route or to control your music from your bracelet.

Some breathing exercises are also offered to relieve the pressure and there are some tools that are always welcome such as a stopwatch, a timer and an alarm clock.

Oppo Band repiration

It is even possible to trigger the camera of your smartphone remotely or ring it when you have “misplaced” it in the house and set up activity alerts. The Oppo Band also monitors 12 sports including swimming thanks to its 5 ATM water resistance.

Oppo Band sports
The bracelet offers to track 12 sports activities: jogging outdoors, indoors and for fat loss, sports walking and outdoor cycling, indoor cycling, elliptical trainer, rower, cricket, badminton, swimming in a pool and yoga. For the rest you can opt for free exercises.

Notifications are also in the game (calls, SMS, social networks, etc.). While it is of course impossible to take calls, they can be refused.

Oppo Band call

You can easily read your messages from the screen despite the small size of the characters, but note that emojis are not supported.

Oppo Band SMS

Conversely, nothing really makes the difference against the competition. For 25 euros more than a Mi Smart Band 5 or 30 euros more than an Honor Band 5, this Band offers functions and techno … from 2020. Worse, we are sometimes a little unsatisfied when we look at near some results. So, regarding the monitoring of your nights, there is no mention of REM sleep. The texts accompanying the data (on the app) are not always clear and repetitive enough.

Oppo Band capture sleep

On the sport side, after a running session, we discover in the app his route on a map and some information (distance, duration, kcalories, average pace) accompanied only by two graphs (heart rate and cadence). A lot of data goes by the wayside : aerobic, anaerobic, VO2Max, average stride length, altitude, phase training breakdown are not mentioned at all.

Oppo Band sport capture

A little disappointing for a product launched in 2021. Especially since the new versions of Xiaomi and Huawei are coming in the coming days with bigger screens and new functions! Finally, let us specify that we encountered some difficulties with the GPS which sometimes seems to have trouble synchronizing with the smartphone. When this is the case, you lose your track and the accuracy of the distance traveled is affected.

Oppo Band GPS capture

Possible that the mid-range smartphone used for the test is in question. One thing is certain, do not hesitate to run the GPS a few hundred meters to check that everything is going well. Then relaunch it to complete your entire route avoiding tunnels to avoid stalling!

Heytap Health: a basic, but effective application

Called HeyTap Health, Oppo’s health app is particularly intuitive to use. You can access its content through three sections. Santé displays the day’s information (sleep time, number of steps or heart rate, etc.), but also gives access to its old training logs. The section also provides more detailed information than on the Band and some graphics relating to its activities. Fitness for its part gives the possibility of starting a running or walking activity from the smartphone. Manage, finally, allows you to download dials to personalize your watch (5 can be stored locally on the Band), to consult some meager tips and especially to make certain settings, inaccessible from the Band.

Oppo Band capture headings
To stand out in terms of design, Oppo should enrich its app interface with even more original illustrations.

It’s efficient and no frills. As stated earlier, there are quite a few graphics. As for the settings, it’s the same thing. The possibilities are limited, boiling down to what is strictly necessary. It is not possible to establish time slots during which you do not want to be disturbed by a notification accompanied by its vibration (only the reduction of the screen brightness is possible). So you will have to trust the smart mode, likely to miss an alert, just when you were about to fall asleep! This is real life. The essentials are still present and the operation smooth.

Perhaps the interface remains to be improved with more images, encouragement and information. The opening page foreshadowed original illustrations (see above) which are not enough in the various sections. On the other hand, we appreciate the many dials available to personalize your watch. You can even design them from your own photos.

Correct autonomy… Set back from the competition

Oppo announces 12 days of battery life for its Band Style, but you will only achieve this by drastically limiting interactions with your bracelet. Not sure that the user is satisfied with functions limited to reading the time, counting his steps and receiving a few SMS. With fairly intensive use, it is difficult to exceed 4 or 5 days. By avoiding activating energy-intensive functions like continuous heart rate monitoring, SpO2 measurement while sleeping or in real time, you will surely save a day or two, especially if, in the absence of automatic mode , you think about reducing the brightness of the screen indoors. All of this would not be a problem if some competitors did not offer much better. In part, the small built-in 100 mAh battery. The price to pay to offer one of the lightest trackers on the market.

Oppo band spo2

On the load side, count around 1h30 to bring the tracker from 0 to 100%. To do this, you have to remove it from the bracelet if you are using the sport model (it is a bit of a pain) and clip it into the USB charger.

Oppo Band charging

If there is no AC adapter supplied, you will have to use your smartphone’s one, for example. Take care to place the tracker correctly, because it can be clipped even when it is upside down, with the pins of the charger opposite the charging points of the module. Finally, it should be noted that the USB cable integrated into the charger is really very short. A few extra inches wouldn’t have been a luxury.
