O OnePlus 9 Pro is a phone that brings high-end specs, like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. Still, the new smartphone from OnePlus reduces speed when running apps like Google Chrome, Instagram, WhatsApp, among others. This is what a test performed by the AnandTech this Tuesday (6).
The experience comes from benchmark tests made by the site. O AnandTech explained that during the review, some popular apps failed to utilize the full firepower of the cell phone. This would be the case with the Google Chrome browser, for example.
Initially, the site noticed that Google Chrome presents unexpected results for devices with the same processor. In this case, in the Speedometer 2.0 test, the first app achieved 61.5 points. In comparison, Vivaldi had 107 points.
Still, observation is not restricted to scoring only. During testing, Chrome only had access to Cortex-A55 cores, dedicated to “lighter” everyday tasks. Vivaldi, in turn, used the Cortex-X1. However, when opening and closing it, the second browser was only able to use the more powerful features again after being reinstalled.
After this analysis, traces of a lock that prevents the full use of the processing were found inside the system. Apparently, the mechanism kicks in when running an application that is part of a sort of “block list” that the site couldn’t find. In other words: It is possible that OnePlus 9 Pro is restricting the reduced performance when detecting the opening of specific applications.
The results with more detail from the post are related to Google Chrome and Twitter. But the site even tested other apps that were also affected by the crash, such as Instagram, WhatsApp and even apps from OnePlus itself.
O AnandTech it still claims that the mechanism applies to “pretty much anything that has some level of popularity on the Play Store”. On the other hand, there are some exceptions, like benchmark tests and less popular apps like Lyft, which compete with Uber. Some games, such as Genshin Impact, were also not limited during the review.
Why does OnePlus 9 Pro slow down apps?
It’s still unclear the reason for the performance reduction in some apps. But the publication suggests that the mechanism could serve to improve power consumption and extend the phone’s lifespan. This behavior, however, tends to keep the benchmark results and user experience misaligned, according to the site.
Even so, it is necessary to consider that this limitation possibly does not affect the daily experience, if it does not go unnoticed. The website says that the smartphone still has a responsive performance on a daily basis. Also, there are no comments regarding mobile performance issues so far.
O AnandTech it also informs you that the tests were run on firmware version 220.127.116.11 and that it was not possible to confirm that the engine also appears on other OnePlus phones.
OnePlus 9 Pro has Snapdragon 888 inside it
OnePlus 9 Pro makes up the new crop of cell phones from OnePlus. The phone was unveiled to the public in late March with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, the same as the US Samsung Galaxy S21 line, inside. Additionally, the smartphone is available in editions with up to 12GB of RAM.
Other highlights are the 120 Hz screen. On the back, the photographic set was prepared in partnership with Hasselblad and has a 48 megapixel main camera. The smartphone also has a 4,500 mAh battery and Android 11 from the factory.
At the time, the option with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage hit US stores for US$969 (about R$5,035 in direct conversion). The model with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of space landed in the country for US$ 1,069 (R$ 5,555). There is no forecast for launching OnePlus 9 Pro in Brazil.
