LG K62 + Review: updated look, outdated performance [análise/vídeo]

LG’s smartphone division has not been making good profits, but the company remains firm and strong launching cell phones in many markets. In Brazil, the Korean manufacturer has already placed several intermediaries in stores this year 2020 and the LG K62 + is one of them. It comes with everything we are used to: big screen, lots of battery and multiple cameras with high numbers.

The brand hit the nail on the head and soon made me think that the goal here is to compete strongly with the intermediate models of fellow Samsung. Okay, the design team was excited. And the performance and performance team? Is it worth migrating to the LG K62 +? I tell you everything in this review.

Design

The K62 + is an improved version of the K62. They are identical in look, but the more powerful brother won a shiny metal-like frame (in the style of LG Velvet), while the sides of the common K62 follow the main color of the device. It is good to remember, however, that this device is all plastic, no metal or glass.

LG did not want to skimp on the design – and this is great! The camera module is well positioned and has a silver finish, and the matte back that does not accumulate fingerprints is available in two shades: white and baby blue.

A transparent cover accompanies the product and caught my attention the firmness of the accessory that still protects the sides of the phone well. And, of course, military resistance is present, but that does not mean that the cell phone is unbreakable. But it is a good reinforcement in security.

A welcome change is the fingerprint reader which is now on the left side of the smartphone and not on the back as on the K61.

If you have two numbers, his drawer accepts two chips and a memory card up to 2 TB. The standard headphone jack has been maintained and is next to the USB-C jack at the bottom of the device.

Screen and sound

More affordable devices or the same price as the K62 + have a better panel. This is the case of the Galaxy A31 and Galaxy M21s, equipped with Super AMOLED. What I mean is that at least in this “more powerful” version, LG could deliver a more advanced screen to compete better with these Samsung devices, in addition to being a big differentiator compared to the K62 and K52.

However, here we have a 6.6-inch LCD screen, HD + resolution (1600 x 720 pixels), 20: 9 aspect ratio with a hole for the 28 megapixel selfie camera. In short, the display is somewhat darkened, with low saturation, but you can have a more favorable view by slightly increasing the brightness.

I spent a few hours consuming videos on the K62 + and the big screen provides a good experience and so do games. Of course, the edges are around here, but I believe they don’t hurt usability so much because they are thin and the chin is not so prominent.

I found the speaker low, so I recommend using the headset and it’s also cool to activate the “LG 3D Sound” mode, which, as its name suggests, creates a feeling of being immersed in the film or series, in addition to be interesting during gambling.

Software

It runs Android 10. For those who already know the recent LG cell phones, the K62 + interface is well-organized and I can easily find everything I need. My observation, again, goes to the quick access bar that could be completely dark for easy viewing.

The device already comes with many pre-installed applications, including some from LG are here and can be useful for those consumers involved in the brand’s ecosystem with televisions, refrigerators and other products. If you want, you can uninstall all of them.

On the left side of the device is the classic Google Assistant button, which facilitates quick access to the search giant’s virtual assistant. It’s just a shame that I can’t configure it for other functions. Maybe next time, right?

By default, it does not come with the application drawer, yet I was able to activate its display through the “Home Screen Settings” menu when you press the screen for a few seconds. There, widgets and wallpapers can still be configured.

Cameras

The LG K62 + is a cool phone for basic consumers who are a little more demanding in terms of camera. LG introduced four lenses here: the main one, called the “smart camera”, has 48 megapixels; the wide angle has 5 megapixels; the macro and the depth sensor have 2 megapixels. They are accompanied by a double flash, another differential in this model.

I spent a weekend evaluating these cameras and I really liked the results, except for the macro. The main one has a very good definition, with bright colors pulling for the natural, which is great. It also uses Artificial Intelligence to help the user to have better photographs, to do so just change the setting to “AI CAM”, in the camera app.

Ultrawide produces cool photos, but the definition is slightly hindered by noise jutting out across the image; the grain is even more evident in dark tones. The depth sensor works with the main camera and has a blur that I consider exaggerated, showing the artificial. Finally, you can’t expect incredible quality with the 2-megapixel macro on the K62 +: colors are weak and sharpness is badly affected.

It has Quad Cell technology to help with night shots, which increases brightness, prioritizes highlights and controls noise. I liked the solution and, in practice, the quality of the images is satisfactory, but notice how the lights are blown off at various points in the photo.

The 28 megapixel selfie camera does a good job. Saturation is controlled, the level of detail is satisfactory, but again I felt that post-processing does not work well with the blur and presents considerable errors.

Hardware and battery

There was no improvement in the hardware. The LG K62 +, which is considered “more powerful”, should hit the market with another processor, like the Snapdragon 662, 665 or a more advanced chip from Mediatek. The intermediary operates with the eight-core Helio P35 running at up to 2.3 GHz coupled with 4 GB of RAM and GPU PowerVR GE8320. The available internal storage is 128 GB.

I believe that you will not be surprised by his performance, right? The K62 + is, in fact, a cell phone for basic tasks, as any other more intense activity can make the device breathless easy. I did some tests and it runs well on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, but some crashes can come up – nothing that compromises usability in general.

You may notice a difficulty in switching between applications. Unexpected shutdown only occurred once on the Play Store while I was installing Asphalt 9. And speaking of the title, this game even runs without a lot of headaches as long as the graphics settings are standard. On the other hand, the simplest games work very well on the K62 +.

There is no way to say that LG failed to choose the processor and most likely the smartphone may get worse in the future. At least you’ll find other intermediary devices that can deliver much better performance for less.

The 4,000 mAh battery is a strong point and it also means that K62 + shouldn’t let you down. It is possible to have a charge for up to two days, but everything will depend on its use with screen brightness, game consumption and other media.

In one day, I consumed two hours of Netflix, one hour of YouTube, 20 minutes of social media and ended with 10 minutes of Asphalt 9. I started with 100% and ended the use with 61%. Not bad, is it? In the box, LG sends a 10 watt source that makes the battery go from zero and reaches 100% in 2h10min, an ok time.

LG K62 +: is it worth it?

The uninviting price, the inferior performance and the non-OLED screen prevent me from recommending the K62 +, especially when we stop to analyze the competition that delivers all this for an acceptable value. Therefore, this device is more suitable for loyal LG consumers and who found the K62 + in a good promotion. It is also worth mentioning that this is a model that tends to depreciate quickly, as it happens with other products of the brand.

So much so that it already appears in online retail for around R $ 1,400, that is, almost the same price as the K61, which I could also indicate here in place of the K62 +, since both share many features, as well as performance. However, this device excels at bringing Android 10, while the K61 parked at Android 9 Pie.

Better options for less than R $ 2 thousand are not lacking. Nokia 5.3, for example, offers superior performance and has a better panel. The same goes for the Samsung Galaxy A31, Galaxy A51 and Motorola One Fusion, three great top middlemen that leave the K62 + behind.
