With the launch of the iPhone 12 Mini in October 2020, Apple not only continued to sell the 2018 iPhone XR in Brazil, but also increased its prices in the domestic market. The unusual scenario ends up leaving consumers in doubt: it is worth waiting and buying the model of the iPhone 12 line, or even with the price increase, the iPhone XR offers better cost-benefit?
To answer these questions, we set up a technical sheet comparison between the models. See the analysis below and find out which cell phone has the necessary resources for your day to day.
Price of iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone XR
The iPhone 12 Mini is not yet on sale in Brazil (and there is also no information about the launch price of the smartphone here). In the United States, it costs from US $ 699 (about R $ 3,900, excluding taxes) in exchange program, or US $ 729 single (R $ 4,066, excluding taxes).
The iPhone XR is sold abroad for US $ 499. It seems little, but in Brazil the smartphone of 2018 arrived at a price starting at R $ 4,299, and today it costs R $ 4,999 (official price in the Apple store). See the complete values in the table below.

Design, colors and canvas
Who likes the colorful models, will have good options with both iPhone XR and iPhone 12 Mini. Both are sold in different colors, in addition to the traditional black and white. The options are:
- iPhone 12 Mini: black, white, red, green and blue
- iPhone XR: black, white, red, blue, yellow and coral
The design reserves some peculiarities in the iPhone 12 line: Apple decided to return with the flattened metallic edges, as in the old models (iPhone 4 and 5). In addition, the iPhone 12 Mini has a dual rear camera, in a very similar look to the iPhone 11. The iPhone XR, in turn, has a single lens on the back, like the iPhone SE 2.
The newer model is also more resistant to water and dust. While the XR was IP67 certified (up to one meter for a maximum of 30 minutes), the iPhone 12 Mini has an IP68 guarantee (up to 6 meters for 30 minutes).
OLED screen only on the latest model
The iPhone 12 Mini is a kind of evolution of the evolution of the iPhone XR. On the screen, the improvement is evident: instead of a Retina HD display, we finally have an OLED panel, which in addition to being more economical, delivers more vivid colors and better contrast.
The size also changes to live up to the name “Mini”: 5.4 inches, against 6.1 inches on the iPhone XR.
The dimensions are as follows:
- iPhone 12 Mini: 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.4 mm / weight: 133 grams
- iPhone XR: 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3 mm / weight: 194 grams
So, if you are looking for a small and light smartphone, you should find the best option on the iPhone 12 Mini.
What’s in the box
Apple announced during the launch of the iPhone 12 line that it will no longer include the plug adapter and EarPods headphones in the box of iPhones. The novelty also applies to the iPhone XR, iPhone SE (2020) and iPhone 11 shipped from the factory.
This means that you may end up finding an iPhone XR with charger and headphones at retail, as a matter of stock, but be aware that they are numbered.
iPhone 12 Mini has the best performance
Size doesn’t matter, and Apple wants to prove it with the iPhone 12 Mini. Despite being a compact version, the smartphone promises high firepower with the same processor present in the Pro and Pro Max versions, the A14 Bionic.
This chip is manufactured in 5 nanometers and can deliver greater energy efficiency, in addition to performance 50% higher than that of its predecessor, the A13 Bionic, of 2019.
The iPhone XR is further back, with the A12 Bionic, manufactured at 7 nm, which is a good processor, in general, and will not encounter difficulties when running demanding apps and heavier games, despite not being the most advanced chip.
Support for 5G networks
It should be noted that the iPhone 12 line is also the first to support 5G networks. The technology should take a few years before it is widely implemented in Brazil, however, anyone who is considering buying a smartphone to maintain for at least three years, may start to worry about this issue.
Camera: iPhone XR is less versatile
If you are looking for professional performance cameras, the best option is the iPhone 12 Mini, which has a dual rear camera (12 MP + 12 MP), offering greater versatility with the ultra-wide lens.
In addition, for selfies, the smartphone features a 12 MP (f / 2.2) sensor with support for Night Mode, for better photos when there is low light in the environment.
The iPhone XR, in turn, has only one camera at the rear, 12 MP, in addition to a front camera of 7 MP (f / 2.2). In this case, there is no night mode to improve the result of images in the dark.
In video, the iPhone 12 Mini also excels with the ability to record in HDR with Dolby Vision at up to 30 fps.
Battery and charging
According to Apple, the iPhone 12 Mini has autonomy for up to 15 hours of video playback away from the outlets. The manufacturer’s estimate is an extra hour for the iPhone XR.
Of course, in practice, the duration also depends on consumption depends on the user. The iPhone 12 Mini can end up draining the battery more quickly with the use of 5G – however, Apple has the “Smart Data” mode that promises to help balance the use of data, speed and energy in real time.
Wireless charging has also been upgraded to the iPhone 12 Mini: with MagSafe, the smartphone can charge twice as fast as the iPhone 11.
iPhone 12 Mini or iPhone XR: which cell phone to buy?
These are difficult times ($$$) for Apple fans. The iPhone 12 Mini is superior in almost all aspects of the comparison – it promises better performance, the best photos, has an OLED screen and supports 5G (although this is not such a decisive factor in Brazil). However, what can alienate many consumers is the price in the national market, which tends to be (quite) high.
On the other hand, the iPhone XR is more limited in cameras and was released two years ago – which is not so significant now, but it could be a long-term cons. If you don’t give up on the iOS experience and need to buy a new iPhone, the XR is still a nice option (in retail, it can still be found in the range of R $ 3,499), and you can find bigger discounts on second-hand models. hand.
Depending on how much time you are planning to spend with this smartphone, it may be more interesting to add a little more to buy an iPhone 11 or 12, and get a longer life, in addition to improvements in cameras and more advanced performance.
