At one of the most anticipated technology events of the year, Apple announced new products: in addition to the HomePod Mini, a cheaper version of the smart speaker, the company launched four new smartphones. The new line iPhone 12 has new colors, magnetic charger support MagSafe, 5G connectivity and reinforced coating OLED screens.
The new HomePod Mini
The first novelty of the event was the HomePod Mini. With a smaller design than the HomePod launched in 2017, the smart speaker promises high quality sound with minimal distortion. The product carries an Apple S5 chip, the same present in the Apple Watch Series 5 and SE.
One of the features is the integration of the speaker with the iPhone: it is possible to approach the smartphone by playing a song that the HomePod Mini starts to play it automatically. You can use the same feature to find out what’s touching the box.
For $ 99, Apple informed the Tecnoblog that there is no forecast for launching the HomePod Mini in Brazil. The model launched in 2017 never landed in the country and did not support Siri in Portuguese.
The new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini
If you like the design of the iPhone 4, this is good news: Apple has taken over the flattened edges on the new 2020 smartphone line. With aluminum edges and glass back, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini will be sold in five colors : blue, green, white, black and red.
Apple says the iPhone 12 is 11% thinner, 15% smaller and 16% lighter than its predecessor. Speaking specifically of the screen, the conventional iPhone 12 has the same 6.1 inches as the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR. The iPhone 12 Mini comes with a 5.4 inch display, in a smaller body than the iPhone 8 and iPhone SE, which have a 4.7 inch screen.
Apart from the size difference, the technical specifications of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Mini are identical. The devices feature an OLED screen, dual rear camera with wide and ultra-wide lenses, 12 megapixel sensor and 4K video recording capability at up to 60 frames per second or HDR with Dolby Vision, something unprecedented in smartphones.
Speaking of the chip, the new line features the 5 nanometer A14 Bionic processor, with a promise of extra 50% efficiency compared to the graphics of “any other smartphone”. With versions of 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB, smartphones start to be sold in 35 countries from Friday. There is still no forecast of arrival in Brazil.
iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are really ‘pro’
The Pro line hasn’t changed with respect to size, but Apple has still done space-saving work: screens jumped from 5.8 inches to 6.1 inches on the iPhone 12 Pro and from 6.5 inches to 6.7 inches on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
With a glass back and a steel side finish, the iPhone 11 Pro comes in four colors: silver, black, gold and blue. In addition to the wide and ultra-wide lens, those who buy the top of the line Apple will also have the 4x optical zoom on the iPhone 11 Pro and 5x on the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
The main sensor is capable of receiving 87% more light, which can produce good photos in low light environments. Apple highlighted the night mode for photos with blurred background effect (Portrait function), thanks to the LiDAR scanner that measures depth of field.
The update will be very welcome for those who produce audiovisual content with the iPhone: the smartphone is capable of recording in HDR with Dolby Vision at up to 60 fps. The company also announced the Apple ProRAW, which will arrive by the end of 2020. The format preserves the post-processing of CPU, GPU, ISP and Neural Engine in the photos, which can be edited without loss of quality.
A good news is that Apple increased the minimum storage in the Pro line, which now has 128 GB in the entry model and 512 GB in the most expensive version. Like the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini, there is still no date to arrive in Brazil.
Say goodbye to the charger and headset
With promises to cut carbon emissions, Apple removed the headphones and plug adapter in the boxes of all iPhones. The change affects even earlier models that continue to be sold, such as iPhone 11 and iPhone XR.
The box comes with only a USB-C cable for Lightning, and here is a good point for reflection: only the iPhone 11 Pro line included the USB-C socket adapter for Lightning – all other models were sold with the USB-A adapter for Lightning. There will be many new iPhone 12 users who will have nowhere to plug in the new smartphone.
iPhone 12 supports MagSafe charger
In addition to removing the charger from the box, Apple announced a new way to charge the smartphone and adapted the MagSafe standard for smartphones.
The new standard promises to improve wireless charging on the iPhone 12, mainly by allowing easy and quick alignment of the induction coils. Taking advantage of the set of magnets available on the smartphone, Apple announced protective covers and even a wallet to stick it on the smartphone.
The magnetic charger is sold separately and costs $ 39, while compatible cases start at $ 49. The company also demonstrated a dual charger for iPhone and Apple Watch, but the price has not been revealed.
The 5G comes to the iPhone
All new iPhone models include 5G support, and this is the first time that an Apple smartphone supports the technology.
With a promise of low latency, Apple reveals that the iPhone 12 reaches peak speeds of up to 3.5 Gb / s download on Sub6 and 4 Gb / s networks in the best scenarios with millimeter frequencies (mmWave). The manufacturer expects an average of 1 Gb / s under typical conditions.
The new iPhones already arrive with support for the 5G frequencies that will be adopted in Brazil, but there is a detail: the millimeter waves, which allow the extremely high speeds, will be restricted to the devices sold in the USA.
Good news for Brazilians is that the North American iPhone will work with the 700 MHz 4G here, something that did not happen with the iPhone 11, XR and XS.
