Invocation of Evil: understand the chronological order of horror films

Want to know the chronological order of the films in the franchise Invocation of Evil? It’s time!

Anyone who is a fan of horror films probably already knows the Warren couple. Paranormal investigators were first portrayed in Invocation of Evil and, from the success of the first feature, the universe expanded.

As the release of the films does not follow a clear chronological order, we set up a timeline for you to better understand how the whole franchise fits.

Invocation of Evil: chronological order of films

The Nun (1952)

The oldest story is also one of the most recent films in the franchise. The film follows a nun and a priest who are assigned to investigate an evil case in a church in Romania.

The Nun presented in this production is seen in Invocation of Evil 2 and quoted in Annabelle 2: The Creation of Evil.

Annabelle 2: The Creation of Evil (1943 – 1955)

A few years before the investigation in Romania, the couple Samuel and Esther Mullins lose their daughter Bee (nickname for Annabelle) in a car accident. A demon convinces the two of them to let him use one of the girl’s old dolls so he can continue to live. When the possessed doll becomes violent, they lock it up.

Twelve years later, the couple opens their home to a group of orphaned girls. One of the girls finds Annabelle and sets her free, causing chaos.

The doll first appeared in the franchise as a side story in Invocation of Evil.

Annabelle (1967)

John presents his pregnant wife with a porcelain doll, unaware of his demonic past. The couple soon becomes involved in a series of dangerous events, beginning with the death of their neighbors.

The film that started the whole franchise begins with the Warren couple discovering about Annabelle’s demonic possession. But that is not the main story of the production.

Ed and Lorraine are called in to investigate a likely demonic demonstration at the home of a family with five daughters. At first, the investigators believe it is just another mistake of frightened people, but they end up discovering that something very powerful and bad resides there.

Annabelle 3: Back Home (1971)

The movie starts where Invocation of Evil stopped, with Ed and Lorraine managing to arrest Annabelle in her museum of cursed objects. When the couple decides to travel and leaves little Judy at home with the nanny, the doll takes advantage of the absence of paranormal investigators to be able to break free.

The Curse of Weeping (1973)

Many do not know, but this production is also connected to the universe of Evil Innovation. This is because the priest who appears here is the same as Annabelle.

The film follows a social worker who begins to see similarities between a case she is investigating and the legend of Chorona.

The tale says that, in life, Chorona drowned his children and then threw himself into the river, bursting into tears. Now, she cries forever, capturing other children to replace what she lost.

Invocation of Evil 2 (1976-1977)

While investigating the famous Amityville case, Lorraine has a vision of the death of her husband Ed accompanied by the appearance of the Nun. During the film, the couple tries to help a single mother and her four children who are being haunted by an evil entity.

The film also shows for the first time the Crooked Man, who should appear in other productions of the franchise.

Invocation of Evil 3 (1981)

Summoning of Evil 3: The Demon Order has not yet opened, but it is already scheduled to hit theaters. The film will follow another real case of the Warren couple. This time, they will help a young man who is on trial for murder. The defense claims that he committed the crime because he was possessed by the demon.

In addition to a confirmed debut for 2021, the universe of Invocation of Evil still has other productions in progress.

The story about the Crooked Man has already had the green light from the studio, but there is still no further details about the plot or the cast. Another feature that should hit theaters soon is Nun 2, with Bonnie Aarons replaying the role of the evil creature.
