Firewatch is a beautiful game that talks about life decisions, escape and solitude – Games – Tecnoblog

Video games don’t need to have frequent combat and action to offer players great moments. This is the case for Firewatch e Disco Elysium, two independent games that focus on deep storytelling rather than relying on complex gameplay mechanics. In the following lines, I introduce you to these two titles and tell a little of my experiences with them.

Firewatch it’s a real journey of self-discovery

  • Developer: Campo Santo;
  • Platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch e PC (Steam).

As I said above, a game doesn’t need combat to be interesting, and that’s the premise of Firewatch. With a deep and thought-provoking narrative, Campo Santo’s game is one of my favorite indies. I still remember the day I played the campaign for the first time: I opened Steam without much pretense and ended the story almost crying.

In the plot of about five hours, you take on the role of Henry, a young man who decides to take a job as a ranger in order to escape some issues in life—which you need to figure out for yourself. Arriving at his new job in the middle of the Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming, USA, the protagonist meets his co-worker, Delilah, who keeps in touch through a walkie talkie.

On a day-to-day basis, Henry’s duty is simple: watch over the forest and prevent fires from breaking out. For this, you have a map and a compass, as well as a privileged view from your tower, which is located at a strategic point among the trees. During patrols, the protagonist always tries to talk to Delilah, his only company in the solitary routine.

As the days go by, his friendship with Delilah grows more and more, as does his paranoia for being alone and isolated for too long. Furthermore, Henry and Delilah are involved in a mystery that unmasks the two characters’ innermost insecurities. On this journey of self-discovery, you will identify with one of the protagonists, or even both.

In the graphic part, Firewatch has a style all its own. Even with a cartoony look, the game has landscapes that take your breath away and relax at the same time. It is also worth mentioning the performances of Rich Sommer and Cissy Jones as Henry and Delilah, respectively. The two are largely responsible for connecting the protagonists’ experiences and personalities to the audience.

The soundtrack composed by Chris Remo is a show apart. Each song not only fits perfectly into the setting and events of the script, it also enhances the immersion in the world of Firewatch, with effects of wind, insects and other noises of nature.

Play Firewatch it was a unique experience that I don’t forget to this day. As short as the story is, you can connect with the protagonists and identify with their insecurities. If you’re looking for a way to escape the harsh reality of life, but don’t want to isolate yourself in the middle of the forest, this game is worth giving it a try.

Disco Elysium it has a dense and complex police script

  • Developer: ZA / UM;
  • Platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch e PC (Steam).

Continuing on the narrative-focused game’s footprint, Disco Elysium it was a pleasant surprise I had recently. On the contrary Firewatch, whose story has a single path, Disco Elysium brings elements of classic RPGs to the plot, such as different routes and physical and social skills that can evolve as the character moves up a level.

In the plot, you are an alcoholic detective who wakes up in a hotel room without remembering his own identity. Even with amnesia, the protagonist becomes involved in a case in which a man was hanged and murdered. Your duty will be to explore the city of Revachol, talk to other characters and gather clues to find the culprit for the crime.

In Disco Elysium, every moment of dialogue between two characters is valuable — and it can last a long time, like a great book chapter that never ends. During these long conversations, you can choose different interaction options to get what you want, and these decisions directly influence the development of the story.

In March of this year, the producer ZA/UM further enhanced the experience of Disco Elysium with the version The Final Cut. This edition includes several technical improvements, such as support for 4K resolution and controls, but also adds new missions, new characters, a more challenging hardcore mode.

In addition, the game is now fully dubbed (in English), which helps to better understand the personality of the citizens of Revachol. Don’t worry about the language, because as much as the speeches are in English, there are subtitles available in Brazilian Portuguese.

With graphics in isometric style, Disco Elysium has visuals that are very reminiscent of a hand-painted canvas. Its soundtrack is also noteworthy, as it combines with the game’s melancholy atmosphere and enhances the immersion in the plot.

Disco Elysium it’s not such a simple game. It is relatively long and requires a lot of attention, especially in dialogs with a lot of text. If you don’t have the patience, you’re likely to get frustrated. However, if you’re looking for a game to dive headfirst into a complex script without haste, it’s worth giving it a try.
