Instagram recently backtracked on its decision about displaying the number of likes on its platform and ended up releasing a set of options that make the feature optional for every user. Thanks to the update, it is now possible to completely hide the likes counter or activate it only for certain posts, depending on your account preference.
In this context, TecMundo has prepared a small guide to help the user during the process, which, fortunately, is quite simple. Despite appearing trivial, the feature promotes more control in managing the privacy of the account and makes the user experience more personalized.
Hiding Instagram Likes
If the user wants to hide the likes counter both in their posts and in the feed of publications, just activate the switch which can be found in the settings section. To access it, just tap the profile tab, located in the lower right corner, select the “three bars” icon in the upper right corner and tap the option settings, again in the lower right corner.
Next, just select the section Privacy and then tap Ppublications. Finally, the option to hide the likes counter must be the first one on the list. In the future, if desired, the user can reverse the process using the same steps and toggling the selection key.
Briefly, the full path to enable or disable the function is: Profile > Settings > Privacy > Posts > Likes and Views > Hide the number of likes and views. Check out:

Hiding Post Likes
Alternatively, the user can also choose to hide or show the count of likes and views for a specific post. In this case, simply select the desired publication, tap the “three dots” icon in the upper right corner, then tap Hide number of likes.

Likewise, it is also possible to hide the likes counter even before posting. If desired, just tap Advanced Settings, found just before finalizing the post. Further on, you can find the key to toggle the display of likes or views of the post.

More quality, less competitiveness
In September 2019, Instagram began hiding its platform’s like and view counters as a way to study its impact on the well-being and mental health of its users. Initially, the company hoped to reduce the social pressure exerted by the search for more engagement, thereby eliminating some of the competitiveness that could be seen as harmful.
Interestingly, new data revealed that the measure had little impact on users’ well-being and that, similarly, the use of social media itself has few links to the mental health of young people — according to an Oxford University study. However, Instagram decided to keep the policy on an optional basis in order to promote more freedom to the user and contribute to the idea of promoting less competitiveness on the platform.
