digital terrestrial radio arrives in France on July 15, 2021

The CSA stopped the date of July 15 to officially launch DAB + everywhere in France. Digital terrestrial radio has actually existed since the 1990s in France, but in a limited way. The technology makes it possible to improve the sound quality while offering additional services, a bit like DTT. You need a special receiver to take advantage of it.

You will soon be able to say goodbye to your old radio. The CSA has in fact decided to launch DAB + technology everywhere in France on July 15, 2020. The technology DAB +, for Digital Audio Broadcasting is a new digital network for radios. The system must at the same time be able to transmit sound with the AAC + standard (MPEG-4 Part 3).

Which means both that ”there will be no more “frying” in the event of poor reception (it will be all or nothing), and that additional services will be able to appear, such as for example thedisplay additional information, as well as small images (the system can transmit data with a multiplex bandwidth of the order of megabit per second).

Arrival of DAB + in France: for the moment the radios will also continue to broadcast in FM

The first thing to understand is that unlike TNT which very quickly replaced the classic TV network, no date or even horizon has yet been set to stop old-fashioned FM radio. The two reception modes will therefore continue to coexist during sometime. What the CSA announces above all is in fact the availability of DAB + in all French living areas. Experiments around digital terrestrial radio have indeed taken place in France since the 1990s.

Leading to a first official launch on June 20, 2014. But access was initially limited to three areas: Paris, Nice and Marseille. Subsequently, more cities were covered, increasing the coverage rate. It is currently 30% of the territory, but the CSA intends to make rapid progress between now and the launch to cover practically the entire territory. It should be noted, however, that the end of the FM network is ultimately likely. In Europe, Norway stopped broadcasting on FM in 2017.

Other countries have scheduled the end of FM broadcasts, this is the case for Switzerland (closure scheduled for 2024), Denmark should switch to all DAB + in 2023. Slovenia for its part is considering the end of FM for 2022. Note that the reverse is also true : in countries where the population shuns ATMs, there are cases of digital network shutdown. This is particularly the case of Finland and Portugal.

What radios can you listen to on the DAB + network?

In total 25 national radio stations will be available everywhere, but there may be several dozen additional radios locally.

Do I need a special receiver to receive DAB +?

Yes … but maybe not depending on your situation. DAB + technology obviously requires a receiver capable of recognizing and decompressing digital signals. A study showed in 2018 that only 8% of French households were equipped with one or more DAB + receivers. However, since December 21, 2019 all radio manufacturers who sell sets in France must integrate DAB + technology into their receiver.

The obligation was extended to car radios and therefore to cars in June 2020. This means that if you bought a radio after December 2019 or a car radio after June 2020 your equipment is probably compatible with DAB + technology.
