The release of Cyberpunk 2077 has been very complicated, even catastrophic in some aspects. However, CD Projekt may be rubbing its hands, as the Polish studio has announced that it has sold 13 million copies of its game. This figure could have been even higher, since it does not count the copies that have been refunded. Cyberpunk 2077 thus marks the best start of 2020.
Never has a game been so eventful. Available for thirteen days now, Cyberpunk 2077 has chained the controversy. Between unplayable console versions, a PC version sees its backups corrupted or the anger of investors, the last few days have been complicated for the CD Projekt Red studio. However, he has enough to rub his hands, since the first sales figures are simply stratospheric.
When the game was released, the studio had already announced that it had honored more than 8 million pre-orders. Today, the sales figures for the first ten days have been announced: Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 13 million copies. It is enormous. It’s even one of the biggest launches in video game history.
It should be noted that this figure of 13 million takes reimbursement requests into account. The Polish studio does not give the number of people who returned their copy on PS4 or Xbox One, but this launch could have been even more colossal if the game had not been so disappointing for its technical problems.
Cyberpunk 2077, in the video game pantheon
Cyberpunk 2077 was the most anticipated game of the year, even of the decade. Players awaited him like the messiah, hoping for a title that would be the culmination of an open world generation. No wonder they ran into it as soon as it was released, if they haven’t pre-ordered it before. In addition, blind faith was in order, CD Projekt having a solid reputation before this catastrophic release. So it makes sense to see sales soar so high, so quickly.

For comparison, The Witcher 3, the studio’s previous success, had sold 4 million copies after ten days, when he too was eagerly awaited. To date, the latter has sold over 28 million copies, a figure that will be quickly overtaken by Cyberpunk 2077 at this rate.
Likewise, if you take into account the major video game successes of 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 is above the fray. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, for example, has sold 3.5 million copies. Ghost of Tsushima, the biggest hit in an exclusive game (on PS4), sold 5 million units. The Last of Us 2 four million. Only Animal Crossing New Horizons (Switch) can compete with Cyberpunk 2077 with its 11.7 million copies sold the first ten days of operation.
Cyberpunk is also entering the video game pantheon. The absolute record in terms of launch remains GTA 5, which had raised $ 1 billion in three days. The second is another Rockstar game: Red Dead Redemption 2. The latter had raised $ 725 million over the same period. CD Projekt did not give the revenue for his game, only the sales figures. After a quick calculation, we realize that he is familiar with the success of the game of cowboys in terms of money made. Regardless, Cyberpunk 2077 was in its first week the best startup for a PC game with 4 million units sold on this platform, surpassing World of Warcraft Shadowlands (3.7 million).
Will he continue his momentum?
Running a game is a marathon, not a sprint. It remains to be seen whether the title will continue to win over players over time with all the problems and scandals it has experienced. CD Projekt Red is working to correct bugs and technical issues and we can expect in a proper way on this point in the coming months. But will this be enough to seduce players who have asked for a refund or decided not to crack now? The future will tell.
For the moment, the game is no longer available in digital form on the PS Store or the Xbox store, which should drastically slow down sales. It will come back later when the problems are corrected.
CD Projekt Red says that it has sold 13 million copies of Cyberpunk through digital and physical distribution channels as of December 20.
This number factors in refunds processed by this point at both retail / digital.
