Crunchyroll or Funimation: which anime streaming to subscribe to? | Applications and Software

crunchyroll and Funimation are two anime streaming platforms that are available in Brazil. The advantage here is that they are specialized, focused on this type of program and with a few extras in each one. But which one is the most suitable for you, as a user? crunchyroll or Funimation?

What are?

The two platforms are pretty similar actually! One of the main differences is that Funimation was launched in Brazil only in December 2020, while Crunchyroll has been around for longer – since 2012.

In both, you subscribe with a monthly payment, or in annual packages, and enjoy the entire available catalog, with subtitles or dubbing in Portuguese in some cases.

Funimation or Crunchyroll?

To answer this question, let’s compare the main points of each.

Crunchyroll has the following pricing options:

  • For free (limited access to the catalog via the website and with advertisements)
  • R$25 per month on the Fan plan (access to the entire catalog without restrictions)
  • R$ 32 per month on the Mega Fan plan (with addition of episode downloads)

There are also annual plans, with equivalent prices for each one.

Funimation, on the other hand, costs R$24.90 per month, without the option of a free plan and also with an equivalent annual plan.

The question of price varies a lot: at Crunchyroll you pay more to be able to watch it offline, even though there is a free plan, which does not exist in the competition.

In Crunchyroll’s free plan the user can watch older animes or that are not premium and current animes, but with episodes one week late. Also, there are advertisements, of course.

Image quality

The two platforms do their job well in terms of quality and are virtually identical.

They don’t technically detail how much each anime is displayed on their players, but it’s possible to see everything in very high definition, even though there’s no 4K resolution available.

catalog differences

Funimation’s catalog is obviously smaller, as it is a platform with less time on the market. But they both have a lot of famous animes, including some classics, as well as always-updated episodes, as they are released in Japan.

On Crunchyroll there are also some Doramas and Live Action, which are Japanese programs with real actors – not anime –, which can also be an advantage. In addition, the orange platform also provides readable manga, translated into English, with some hits in the catalogue.

The issue of catalog quality depends on the taste of each audience. In terms of offering anime genres, the two are balanced.

Where are they available?

In Brazil, Funimation can be seen at:

  • PC (Browsers)
  • Android
  • Android TV
  • PS4 and PS5
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Xbox One and Xbox Series S and X
  • roku
  • Fire TV
  • Chromecast

Crunchyroll can be seen at:

  • PC (Browsers)
  • Android
  • iOS
  • PS4 and PS5
  • Xbox One and Xbox Series S and X
  • Apple TV
  • roku
  • Fire TV
  • PS3
  • PS Vita
  • Xbox 360
  • Wii U

Of course, also for reasons of more time to market, Crunchyroll has greater availability of applications and more variety.

What is it worth?

It goes from person to person, but Crunchyroll has the advantage of being a more stable platform. Funimation’s website and applications still lack greater stability, better organization of lists and, in particular, dissemination of series.

It’s a matter of time, of course, but Crunchyroll also has more active support on social networks. It has some classics and anime that are very popular in Brazil, such as Dragon Ball Super and Knights of the Zodiac – Besides One Piece complete.

As they are relatively cheap platforms, I, for example, subscribe to both, since there are not many specialized anime platforms in the world, let alone in Brazil. For you, it’s up to you to read the text, understand the advantages and disadvantages and decide which is the most suitable.
