Claro leads in mobile internet speed, but TIM has the lowest ping – Telecommunications – Tecnoblog

A Ookla, owner of Speedtest, released a report on mobile internet speed in Brazil. During measurements made in the 3rd quarter of 2021 to Of course achieved the highest performance, while the TIM had the best latency performance.

Cell phones in Brazil have an average speed of 33.9 Mb/s

In the data for September 2021, the Brazil took 76th place in the global ranking of mobile internet. The average download speed measured was 33.9 Mb/s, while the upload was 11.11 Mb/s. When it comes to latency (ping), the average of Brazilian mobile networks was 37 ms.

Compared to the same period last year, Brazil lost positions in the ranking, but all indicators improved. In 2020, the average speed was 28.3 Mb/s, while the upload was 10.19 Mb/s and latency reached 42 ms.

Even with the rise in the indicators, the loss of positions in the ranking reflects that operators from other countries achieved better results than Brazilian telecoms. One of the reasons is the delay in the implementation of 5G here, since the Anatel auction should only take place in November 2021.

Of course had better results

Ookla publishes the report with a metric called Speed Score, which takes into account the speeds achieved. Download represents 90% of the indicator, while upload accounts for 10%.

Thus, Claro obtained the best result and was well ahead of Vivo, which occupies the second position. See the complete ranking:

Claro and TIM are the most consistent mobile operators

Another Ookla metric is consistency, which equates to the percentage of minimum speed tests of 5 Mb/s upload and 1 Mb/s upload. In this ranking, TIM surpassed Vivo in the dispute for 2nd place:

TIM had better latency

In the latency results (ping), the ranking is a little different: TIM occupies the 1st place and got better response time than Claro, Vivo and Oi:

Operator Average latency (ping)

TIM
26 ms
2nd place:

The shorter the response time, the better the connection

Claro and Vivo share the podium on the 5G

5G with exclusive frequencies will only arrive after Anatel’s auction in November. However, Brazilian operators have already started an initial implementation using a dynamic spectrum sharing technology (5G DSS), using 2G, 3G and 4G licenses.

Ookla measured the average download speed of these networks, but claims that it is not possible to statistically define which is the best operator, since Claro and Vivo achieved very similar results:

Operator Average speed
Of course 65,82 Mb / s
Vivo 64,61 Mb / s
TIM 58,14 Mb / s

Ookla also released the ranking of cities with the fastest mobile internet. Only capitals appear in the top 10, and Brasília appears in 1st place:
