THE sure announced on Wednesday (4) the expansion of the 5G DSS network. The operator already covered neighborhoods in São Paulo (SP) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ), and the fifth generation service reaches 12 more cities, including Brasília, Goiânia, Porto Alegre and cities in the interior of São Paulo.
The marketing director at Claro, Márcio Carvalho, said that the operator “concluded the implantation in the main neighborhoods” of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and that it will continue to expand the 5G DSS in other municipalities. This time, the company also announces a partnership with Nokia and Huawei – at the initial launch, the only supplier mentioned was Ericsson.
Which cities have Claro’s 5G DSS?
Claro informs that the choice of locations for the implementation of the 5G DSS was based on the high density of traffic, and that the technology allows optimizing access for the greatest number of people.
The company disclosed the covered neighborhoods of only a few cities. O Tecnoblog sought out Claro to obtain the data, but received no response until publication of the article. Check out the full list:

Plans to use with Claro’s 5G
To use Claro’s 5G DSS it is necessary to have a compatible smartphone and be in the coverage area of the technology – it is not necessary to change the chip or have a specific plan.
One problem may be the data franchise: abroad, it is already common to find operators with generous data franchises (more than 50 GB) or even unlimited, even in basic plans. O Tecnoblog asked if the operator intends to adapt its portfolio to plans with no use limit or larger data packages. Claro’s innovation director, Fábio Maeda, says: “Our plans are already adequate, we have a very grand, very generous franchise”.
I feel compelled to disagree with Claro. The R $ 119.90 monthly postpaid plan has only 8 GB of data and another 8 GB exclusive for video services. With speeds of hundreds of megabits, it is possible to consume the entire franchise in minutes. To have access to a 100 GB franchise it is necessary to pay R $ 399.99 per month.
Claro’s 5G DSS will work with iPhone 12
The iPhone 12 line should arrive in Brazil by the end of the year, and one of the differentials of the smartphone is its compatibility with 5G. However, Claro is not yet listed as a compatible operator and Apple’s Brazilian website does not even refer to the fifth generation technology.
O Tecnoblog asked if the iPhone 12 will work with the 5G DSS at launch. Claro’s engineering director, Celso Birraque, said that the company is conducting tests with Apple so that the cell phone works with the technology already at the beginning of sales in Brazil.
