The Nubia Red Magic 6 is not the only gamer phone announced this month. THE Asus just made official the ROG Phone 5, which also comes in versions ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate. They all come with a 6.78 inch screen and Snapdragon 888 chip. The latest model calls attention for bringing 18 GB of RAM.
Asus was no exception to the rule. The three cell phones have an elaborate design on the back, including light effects. In this sense, the Pro and Ultimate versions stand out for having a tiny PMOLED display there, which, in addition to visual effects, can be used for notifications, for example.
On the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, the small display is monochromatic and, on the Pro model, colored.
But it is the set of hardware that runs the show, right?
Wide screen, powerful CPU and dual battery
Let’s start with the screen. The three devices are equipped with an AMOLED panel provided by Samsung. The component is 6.78 inches, refresh rate up to 144 Hz, HDR10 +, touch sampling rate 300 Hz, resolution 2448 × 1080 pixels and brightness up to 800 nits. There is also an optical fingerprint reader integrated into the screen.
In charge is the Snapdragon 888 chip, which equips the three versions. However, the amount of RAM varies depending on the model. The ROG Phone 5 has 8 GB, 12 GB or 16 GB of LPDDR5. The ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate bring 16 GB and 18 GB, respectively.
Asus also draws attention to the battery. Or rather, batteries: the three models are equipped with two 3000 mAh units compatible with a 65 W HyperCharge fast charger.
Dividing the 6,000 mAh into two cells has an additional advantage: this approach improves weight distribution and facilitates heat dissipation.
Cooling and controls
The strategy of placing a battery on each side of the CPU is part of the cooling system GameCool 5 which, in Asus’ words, “ensures that the heat generated by the processor is transferred to all edges and corners of the device body simultaneously to improve thermal efficiency”.
A refurbished steam chamber and graphite layers also contribute to cooling.
Asus also highlights the two buttons AirTrigger 5 on the edges of smartphones. This feature was already available on the line, but has been updated to bring more sensors (nine instead of seven), which should increase the accuracy of responses to commands in games. The Pro and Ultimate versions also have two touch sensitive sensors at the rear.
To complement, the manufacturer brought to the line the AeroActive Cooler 5, an optional accessory that, in addition to adding a cooler to intensify the cooling – the processor temperature can drop by up to 10º C with it -, has two additional buttons and a small support that allows the phone to be supported on a surface.
Audio and Cameras
The rearrangement of the internal space allowed Asus not only to improve heat dissipation, but also to obtain a 35% greater space for the insertion of two stereo speakers optimized by Dirac, a company specializing in digital sound.
Connection for headphones and support for standards such as AAC, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive and LDAC are also present.
Although the other attributes of the ROG Phone 5 draw more attention, the cameras have not been overlooked. The rear has three sensors. The main one is a Sony IMX686 of 64 megapixels accompanied by another of 13 megapixels for wide angle (125 degrees) and a third of 5 megapixels for macro.
The front camera has a 24 megapixel sensor.
