At the end of last Friday (12), Apple officially discontinued the first and only large HomePod model. The novelty does not eliminate the entire line of products with smart speakers, but it is yet another movement that puts an end to an announcement made during 2017.
HomePod was the first Apple product made to compete in the competitive market for smart speakers, within a ring with names already consolidated as all of Echo from Amazon and also Google Home, which later changed its name to Nest. It was announced in 2017 and released in January of the following year, but the product was discontinued by Apple last week.
Apple does not comment on the reason why the company gave up the speaker, but it guarantees the survival of the original HomePod within retail stocks – as long as they last. In the meantime it will receive software updates, technical support and the Mini version, called the HomePod Mini, continues to be manufactured, in addition to being the current focus of the apple brand for smart speakers.
“The HomePod Mini has been a success since its launch in the second half of last year, offering customers incredible sound, an intelligent assistant and smart home control for just $ 99. We are focusing our efforts on the HomePod Mini,” comments Apple in a statement sent to the American press.
“We are discontinuing the original HomePod, it will continue to be available as long as Apple Store online and physical stocks last, as well as Apple authorized resellers. Apple will provide software updates to HomePod customers, as well as Apple Care services and support, ”adds the company.
The HomePod has a format very similar to Amazon Echo Studio, but with a touch screen at the top. Inside the body are seven tweeters pointing in all directions, while the four-inch woofer is down. Six microphones read the audio to equalize the sound, while also being available for voice commands by Siri. Controlling all this is the A8 chip, the same as the Apple TV other than 4K and the iPhone 6.
The HomePod Mini, announced and launched last year, costs just 28.5% of its older brother’s total value. He competes for something between Echo Dot and traditional Echo, or Nest Mini and Nest Audio. The gadget has only one speaker and is compatible with the UWB technology of the latest iPhones.
HomePod and other gadgets of 2017 have been discontinued
There are two more devices announced in 2017 that have left Apple’s shelves around the world. The first is the iMac Pro, an All-in-One computer with robust specifications, black color and which in Brazil was launched for more than R $ 67 thousand.
It reached the end of its life with a ten-core Intel Xeon W processor, 32 GB of RAM, 1 TB SSD and AMD Radeon Pro Vega 56 GPU. The screen is a 27-inch 5K Retina and the computer offers four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Apple continues to sell the 27-inch iMac with specifications aimed at the general public, which can reach R $ 113 thousand with a 10-core i9 Core, 128 GB of DDR4 RAM, 8 TB SSD and Radeon Pro 5700 XT GPU with 16 GB.
Apple’s second withdrawal for products announced in 2017 is AirPower. The difference for this wireless charger is that it didn’t even reach any shelf, it was only on the promise for two years until it was canceled in 2019. His idea was to charge multiple devices at the same time, such as an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, together .
