Apple announced on Tuesday (13) the launch of the iPhone 12 and its variants: iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. With a month delay, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the new smartphones renew the company’s portfolio with resources and technical data already expected, such as support for 5G, LiDAR sensor and A14 Bionic processor. The price starts at $ 699.
iPhone 12 has nostalgic design and new colors
The look of the iPhone 12 line refers to old Apple smartphones, such as the iPhones 4 and 5, with flattened metal frames – something previously denounced with the launch of the iPad Air in September. According to the manufacturer, the iPhone 12 is 11% thinner and 15% smaller than the iPhone 11.
IPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini come in black, blue, green, red and white. The iPhones 12 Pro and Pro Max would have models in blue, gold, graphite and silver. All models are IP68 certified against water and dust, and can be submerged in up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes.
As the rumors already indicated, Apple still maintains the Lightning port (no USB-C port, for now). A novelty that may displease is the contents of the box – there are no more EarPods headphones and no charger source, all of which will have to be purchased separately.
The company’s explanation is the reduction of carbon and mining emissions and the use of precious materials, which would enable smaller and lighter packaging, allowing 70% more boxes to be sent on a pallet.
OLED screens up to 6.7 inches
Apple fans will be able to choose between 4 variants this year: in addition to the conventional and the already known versions “Pro” and “Pro Max”, Apple presents the iPhone 12 Mini, which is the cheapest model of the new crop, and has a screen 5.4 inches.
The conventional iPhone 12 maintains the 6.1-inch screen size of the iPhone 11, but the display now has OLED technology. There’s no longer a 5.8-inch screen – the iPhone 12 Pro also has a 6.1-inch OLED panel and the iPhone 12 Pro Max has the largest display ever seen on an Apple phone: 6.7 inches.
The screens of iPhones now have a new technology called Ceramic Shield that promises even greater durability. According to Apple, it promotes four times more resistance to falls.
The first rumors about the launch speculated that the manufacturer could adopt screens with a higher refresh rate in the most expensive variants, but later leaks already indicated what we saw at the launch: the new iPhones do not follow the smartphone industry with 120 Hz screens ( or 90 Hz).
Event marks the launch of the first iPhones with 5G
The iPhone 12 line is the first prepared for the fifth generation of mobile networks, which promises speed far superior to what we currently achieve with 4G.
All new models are compatible with 5G, but support for millimeter waves (mmWave), which reach speeds of up to 4 Gb / s, is restricted to the United States.
With the “Smart Data” mode, Apple promises to preserve battery life even with the use of 5G, balancing in real time the use of data, speed and energy.
Dual – or triple camera with LiDAR sensor
In terms of cameras, the Pro and Pro Max models stand out with a triple set with telephoto lenses, ultra-wide and wide, in addition to the presence of the LiDAR sensor, already seen in the iPad Pro.
The component allows you to map 3D depth, improving photographic capabilities, especially in low light. The scanner also makes smartphones more capable of using augmented reality features.
The Mini and conventional models have a dual rear camera with 12 MP sensors and wide and ultra-wide lenses. Apple promises better photos in low-light environments with the advancement of machine learning, with an emphasis on Night Mode.
More performance with Apple A14 Bionic
All models announced on Tuesday have an A14 Bionic processor, manufactured in a 5 nanometer process. Apple promises 50% more graphics efficiency than “any other smartphone”.
The iPhone 12 line leaves the factory with iOS 14 – available to iPhone 6s owners onwards since September. Among the highlights of the version, there is the new home screen with support for widgets (finally!), Picture in Picture (PiP) mode and greater flexibility to choose third-party apps like browser and standard email client.
As for the storage specifications, we are as follows:
|iPhone 12 Mini||64 GB||128 GB||256 GB|
|iPhone 12||64 GB||128 GB||256 GB|
|iPhone 12 Pro||128 GB||256 GB||512 GB|
