The MacBooks and Mac Mini announced in 2020 are no longer the only Macs with Apple Silicon. This Tuesday (20), the Apple announced the new iMac with M1 chip. And this is not the only attraction: the novelty also brings a totally renewed design, seven color options, a 1080p webcam and an audio system that promises to be the most immersive ever made available on the line.
The iMac returns to color
If previous generations already had a minimalist design, the new iMac has managed to go further in this respect. You may even have the impression that you are looking at a giant iPhone because of the fineness of the screen – it is only 11.5 mm -, the logo highlighted on the back and the straight surface of the edges.
The seven color options also bring the iMac closer to the iPhone. The traditional metallic gray is there, but now the user also has more options:
- silver grey)
- light green
It’s impossible not to remember the iconic colored iMacs with a tube screen.
Full HD camera and bass sound
Perhaps the new design alone would be enough to convince someone to buy the new iMac. But it is obvious that Apple was concerned with increasing the features of the model. Starts with the camera FaceTime HD, which now features 1080p resolution and three studio-quality microphones.
The media item is complemented with a sound system with six speakers. There are two pairs of woofers that work with force cancellation to enable bass reproduction while reducing unwanted vibrations.
The woofers are complemented with two tweeters high performance. Together, the six speakers can generate audio with a balance of bass, mid and treble for an experience worthy of the stage, in the words of Apple.
24-inch Retina display
11.3 million. This is the number of pixels that the new iMac’s Retina display is capable of displaying. The component is 24 inches in size, 4.5K resolution, 500 nits brightness, anti-reflective coating and supports over 1 billion colors.
Apple also calls attention to True Tone technology, which automatically adjusts the color temperature of the screen according to the ambient lighting conditions.
It is obvious that M1 is present
The new iMac is so thin that, at first glance, it can pass for a video monitor. But, yes, there is a powerful computer behind the screen. Apple itself explained that this was possible, in part, thanks to the M1 module, which brings together CPU, GPU, RAM and other resources in the same place, reducing the need for physical space.
It is clear that the performance of the M1 is the main attribute. Apple says the chip allows the iMac to “wake up” instantly and perform tasks in a very fluid way – our review of the MacBook Pro with M1 does not make us doubt that.
The M1 also supports complementary functions. For example, the chip’s image signal processor can reduce noise and adjust the white balance to improve the camera’s image quality.
Magic Keyboard with Touch ID
Apple did not leave the accessories aside. The new iMac is also accompanied by a new version of the keyboard Magic Keyboard. The accessory brings two interesting novelties: the first is the color, the same as the chosen iMac; the second is the existence of a Touch ID sensor in the upper right corner.
Thanks to this, multiple users can quickly login to the iMac, each one having a fingerprint associated with their account. The Magic Keyboard also has features like emojis and the Do Not Disturb button.
For the entry-level iMac, Apple offers a version of the keyboard without Touch ID. The version with the feature is standard on the most expensive iMacs.
It is also worth mentioning that Apple also offers the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad in the color of the chosen iMac.
In terms of connectivity, the new iMac has, at the rear, two USB4 ports (USB-C) with Thunderbolt. In addition to these, the more expensive versions have two USB 3 ports (also in the USB-C standard) and an Ethernet connection.
The rear also brings a connection to the power source. The accessory cable is attached to the iMac by magnet and, look, it also comes in the color of the model.
Connectivity specifications also include Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 6.
