The new generation of Microsoft video games has already started pre-sales, with launch scheduled for November in Brazil. We have put together a list of common questions such as price, date, backwards compatibility, controls, specifications, services, among other issues about the Xbox Series X and S.
1. What’s new in the new Xbox Series S and X?
Various components, such as the CPU and GPU have had natural advances, to provide better graphics performance and more teraflops, 4K, ray tracing, higher frame rate per second. However, what really marks this generation of consoles is the presence of the SSD (Solid State Drive) instead of the HD, allowing a shorter loading time on the console.
2. What are the technical specifications for each?
|Technical specification||Xbox Series X||Xbox Series S|
|Processor||Custom AMD Zen 2 with 8 cores and 3.8 GHz||Custom AMD Zen 2 with 8 cores and 3.6 GHz|
|GPU (Graph)||AMD RDNA 2 custom with 52 CUs at 1.8 GHz of 12.15 Teraflops||AMD RDNA 2 custom with 20 CUs at 1.5 GHz of 4 Teraflops|
|Memory||16 GB GDDR6||10 GB GDDR6|
|Internal Storage||1 TB SSD||512 GB SSD|
|Reader||4K UHD Blu-Ray Drive||There is not|
|Performance goal||Up to 120 FPS||Up to 120 FPS|
3. What is the release date?
Pre-sales started in Brazil on September 29, 2020, in the main online retail stores. Until the closing date * of this post, the console’s arrival in Brazil is estimated for November 30, but Microsoft has been working to advance this. A new answer will be given by the end of October.
4. What are the prices of the new Xbox Series in Brazil?
- Xbox Series S: R $ 2,999 (US $ 299 in the United States);
- Xbox Series X: R $ 4,999 (US $ 499 in the United States).
5. Why Series X and Series S?
As was the previous generation, Xbox One, Microsoft adopted the same two nomenclatures to separate the two models: “X” is the most stout, most powerful Xbox that delivers the most of the next generation; while “S” brings the next generation experience to a more accessible console.
It is not just the absence of the Blu-ray player that changes, there is less graphics power and less storage capacity as well. We have already published a comparison between the two models, to help clarify this difference.
6. Are the Xbox Series as big as the PS5?
No. On the contrary, both are much smaller than the PlayStation 5 and should fit easily on your mobile, next to the TV. As for the size:
- Xbox Series X is 15.1 centimeters long and deep, by 30.1 centimeters high;
- Xbox Series S is 15.1 inches long, 6.5 inches deep, and 27.5 inches high.
7. What changes in the new Xbox Series controller?
The Xbox Wireless Controller is slightly smaller than the Xbox One controller. But, unlike DualSense, there are few visual changes: the d-pad now abandons the cross shape and adopts a circular directional pad (similar to the Elite Controller) and the triggers have a texture to improve the grip.
There is also the presence of a share button, in addition to the menu and capture buttons, which is in the center of the control. In the Series S version, the only change is the color, to accompany the console’s appearance.
However, what does not change is the dependence of batteries as a battery for control. Yes, just like those on Xbox One, you will need to purchase a separate kit if the player wants rechargeable batteries. For the last generation, this additional accessory costs just under R $ 300 in online retail.
8. Is the Xbox One controller compatible on the Xbox Series?
Yes, especially if the user has an Elite Controller Series 2, sold for more than R $ 2 thousand. Microsoft has also confirmed that the rest of the Xbox One accessories will work on the Xbox Series.
9. Will the Xbox Series controller work on Xbox One?
Yes, the reverse way is also valid. Ryan Whitaker, Xbox’s senior designer, said the controls use the same communication protocol in accessories, the Xbox Wireless Radio.
In fact, the Series X / S control will work on more devices: Android, iOS and PC (Windows and Mac) with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLTE), for low power consumption. The new joystick will also remember paired devices, making switching between them faster and easier.
10. What is the price of the new control?
R $ 499. Only one is included in the console box.
11. Has Microsoft announced new accessories for the Xbox Series?
Until the closing date * of this post, Microsoft only showed the SSD expansion card for the Xbox Series X / S, which will be sold in Brazil for R $ 2,229.
12. Do you have a new game service?
Sony unveiled the PlayStation Plus Collection to add some good games (from previous generations) to the PS5 library. The catalog will be offered with the subscription of PS Plus.
For the Xbox Series X / S, Microsoft already has the Game Pass, with more than 100 games ready to play on the new consoles. To this end, there is even a label to indicate that the game in this catalog is available for Series X and S.
13. What about backward compatibility?
There are still no precise details on how it will work on both consoles, but there will be backward compatibility on the Xbox Series X / S yes, for Xbox One games, 360 and the first Xbox. For the past generation, there are two approaches:
- Xbox Series X will be backwards compatible with Xbox One X game versions;
- Xbox Series S will be backwards compatible with Xbox One S versions.
In both cases, the components will work to improve performance and resolution, improve frame rates and decrease load times.
The difference between the consoles occurs because the Series S has less RAM (10 GB) than the Series X (16 GB) and focuses on the resolution of 1440p instead of the 4K present in the busier model.
It is worth mentioning that the One X also works with more RAM (12 GB) and has a capacity of 6 teraflops (there are 4 in the Series S) – despite being different GPU architectures in the versions.
14. What is Smart Delivery?
Smart Delivery is a feature that delivers the best version of the game on new consoles, as long as the developer offers it.
It works like this: if the player bought a game with Smart Delivery on Xbox One and, after a while, bought the new Series X. When you download this title in the new video game, you will download the optimized version (instead of the backwards compatible), with all the progress and achievements, without the need to buy another copy of the game.
If the player keeps both consoles, the system identifies the hardware and makes the appropriate download for each Xbox.
15. What happens to Xbox One X and S?
At least Microsoft will still have support for a long time. Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division, said that Xbox Game Studios games will continue to come out with versions for the previous generation, without forcing the migration to the new S / X Series.
In an interview with MCV, Matt Booty, head of the Xbox Game Studios division, said that in a year or two, the entire family of Microsoft devices will continue to receive first-party games, to reassure a user that he made a good investment, even if he bought an Xbox One in 2020.
That’s if the user still finds Xbox One for sale. In July 2020, Microsoft declared that it has stopped production of both One X and One S All-Digital. What is being sold at retail is what is left of the inventory.
